Windows 2000 slowdowns

p2pnet.net News:- If you’re running Windows 2000, your computer stops responding, you can’t log on to Windows or your CPU usage approaches 100%, it’s probably because you’ve installed MS04-011, a Microsoft security patch released on April 13.

“The security update that is described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011 contains an issue that causes Microsoft Windows 2000 to try repeatedly to load drivers that do not load successfully,” says Microsoft here.

Microsoft says the problem occurs if any Ipsecw2k.sys, Imcide.sys or, Dlttape.sys drivers are installed, going on, “For example, Microsoft has confirmed that this problem occurs if you have the Nortel Networks VPN client installed and if the IPSec Policy Agent is set to Manual or Automatic for the startup type.”

The article describes workarounds and says Bill and the Boyz are ” researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available”.

Screwed my windows 2000 machine up :( Had just reinstalled windows……. after installing the April 2004 security patch the system seemed to hang for a few seconds on the login screen….not too much of a problem…..had been fine for a few days…then I TURNED OFF my parrallel microtek phantom scanner (whilst machine was off!!) .. when i rebooted it sorta got stuck on the login screen – couldnt enter password or clcik on anything – it just hung (mouse would move though) – managed to boot it into Safe Mode (everything still hanging badly). Advised as per the MS article – turned off IPSec Policy Agent service. Still causes the same problem……. Turned the scanner on and rebooted – worked fine (apart from the slight hang at the login screen – that the patch caused before)…. grrrrrr ……
