‘Piracy’ bill approved

p2pnet.net News:- The entertainment industry can rest easy. The US Senate Judiciary Committee is behind it all the way having approved the Feinstein / Cornyn Artists’ Rights and Theft Prevention Act (ART Act).

“Online piracy of movies, software and music is a growing problem, which threatens the ability of artists to be compensated for their work,” says senator Dianne Feinstein who, with senator John Cornyn, wants to make it an outright felony to copy a movie in a cinema with a camcorder such as those made in their millions by the likes of Sony.

At the moment, it’s a felony conviction only if 10 or more copies of copyrighted material worth more than US$2,500 are distributed.

But, the Feinstein / Cornyn bill would make camcording in a movie house illegal and punishable by fines and up to three years in prison, says an Associated Press story here, from which the Feinstein quote also comes

“Fines and up to five years in prison would apply to anyone who prereleases copyrighted work by making it available on the Internet or other publicly accessible computer networks before its commercial distribution date,” it states.

Coincidentally, so far this year Feinstein has received entertainment industry support to the tune of $269,566.

How long do we have to listen to these tired old “woe is me” songs from hollywood and big music about “paying the artist” when anybody with a pulse KNOWS it’s all about the copyright “owners” getting paid and controlling the market. Compensating the artist? Sorry guys, that dog don’t hunt.

And now they are getting OUR TAX DOLLARS to enforce these fascist special interest spawned laws. Who elected these a-holes? I sure as hell didn’t vote for ‘em.
