Update or else, NY AG tells Facebook
p2pnet news | Politics:- Facebook could face a consumer fraud charge, “for failing to live up to claims that youngsters there are safer from sexual predators than at most sites and that it promptly responds to concerns,” Associated Press has a spokesman for New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo saying.
“We expect an immediate correction eliminating the dangers exposed by our investigation,” stated spokesman Jeffrey Lerner.
Cuomo’s staff met with Facebook, “after the state officials said Facebook took three days to answer calls and e-mails from state investigators,” says Newsday.
Facebook’s fame has brought it in line with accusations which have until now been mainly reserved for Rupert Murdoch’s MySpace, often described as a happy hunting ground for sexual predators, said p2pnet at the beginning of last week.
“An official in Cuomo’s office who spoke on the condition of anonymity said he and others in Cuomo’s office are scheduled to meet with Facebook representatives this week and anticipate changes will follow immediately,” says Newsday.
Lerner said Facebook’s contention of being safer than most sites was accurate when it started out as a closed site 3 1/2 years ago, according to AP, which adds:
“But it’s now much larger, and the safeguards and apparently the response times for complaints aren’t what they once were.”
Corrections and fixes are termed ‘updates’ in corporate parlance.
