Watermarks are not DRM they're more like analog rights management. They follow the signal even if you hold a microphone up to the speakers. The ones Amazon and Itunes use are just identification for now, but theoretically you could use these watermarks to stop copying in the future. I don't trust these sleezy record companies. NO DRM!!! NO ANALOG RIGHTS MANAGEMENT, NOT "RIGHTS MANAGEMENT" OF ANY KIND!!! We should NOT have to hack something we paid for to make it work! (Damn right I won't buy locked down DRM junk like that.)

Why are they putting this information in the watermarks? So they can track a file on P2P networks? As already pointed out what if your media player gets lost or stolen, you get hacked, you want to sell the used copy of a song you bought (and delete the original). Your info follows that file and leads them back to you.

This no DRM thing is a HUGE step forward. DRM is a nightmare. But there's a long way to go to drag these dinosaurs into the present

Allegedly, you can use your UK credit card but give a US address and the address isn't checked. I recommend you use:-
1 Infinite Loop
Cupertino, CA 95014

You are the one that needs to get over it! If you LIKE DRM fine, but most want a song WITHOUT it!

So get a life.

Yes, a website says that was the Amazon store does. But why do you trust it? And WTF does it matter (if true) that is the only thing watermarked in the song? I personally wouldn't mind knowing where my digital music came from.

People want to play their music w/o restrictions on any media player, but then there's nothing but whining going on. Get over it!

They are indeed watermarked. I saw an article on The Register, or The Inquirer forget which, that explained the watermarks only indentify the tracks as coming from Amazon.

Of course, this is cold comfort and is stealth DRM in my book. It's very shady that Amazon do not say anything about this on their site, so we have to find this out from a third party. How long until they embed subscriber information into those watermarks?? Personally, I am boycotting Amazon downloads or any other site that puts DRM of whatever form on my downloaded content.

Those bastards STILL won't let go of DRM.
