Microsoft drops DRM
p2pnet news | DRMs:- Here’s irony for you.
Bill and the Boyz, who practically invented DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control and whose anti-fair use lock-ups are integral to thousands of products around the world, say they’re offering a million MP3 tracks on the Microsoft Zune Marketplace.
And they’ll be, Yup, DRM-free.
Well, they have to do something if Zune toons is ever going to compete with all the other digital music players out there.
“Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer Thursday said the company aims to grow its Zune digital music service and devices, hoping to take market share from Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPod,” says CNN Money, going on:
“We’re going to push our music service and move forward with the devices.”
Microsoft recently revamped its Zune digital music players, “hoping to cash in on the coming Christmas holiday season,” says the story, adding:
“The new Zunes are based on ‘flash’ memory technology that forms the basis of Apple’s iPod Nano. The new Zunes are thinner that the previous version and include a touch sensitive menu pad.”
Says the Toronto Star:
“The new Zunes use flash memory and come in black, green, red and pink in a design reminiscent of Apple’s older iPod Nano. They will go on sale in mid-November at $149 (U.S.) for a 4-gigabyte device and $199 for an 8-gigabyte model, Microsoft vice-president J. Allard said in a briefing yesterday.
Wowee.
