4 ‘criticals’ for Microsoft Black Tuesday

p2pnet news | Security:- What happens every month with frightening regularity?

Microsoft Black Tuesday, the day Bill and the Boyz reveal their fixes for the latest batch of security holes.

And yesterday, they came up with a six item list with four ‘criticals,’ namely:

  • Vulnerability in Kodak Image Viewer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (923810)
  • Security Update for Outlook Express and Windows Mail (941202)
  • Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (939653)
  • Vulnerability in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (942695)

The SANS Institute’s Internet Storm Centre says hackers have been exploiting the critical Word security hole for about eight months.

“This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Word that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Word file with a malformed string,” admits Microsoft, adding blandly:

“Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.”
