Canadian DMCA: on the way
p2pnet news | Politics:- Yesterday, to no one’s surprise, Canadians heard Stephen Harper’s minority Conservative government say it plans to bring Canada more into line with the US.
And the promise, arriving in the speech from the throne, was music to the ears of the entertainment cartels.
With US Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins listening keenly, Canadian governor general Michaelle Jean said the Conservatives would, “improve the protection of cultural and intellectual property rights in Canada, including copyright reform”.
Says Ottawa law professor Dr Michael Geist, in prioritizing copyright reform, there were, “No words of balance, no words of access – simply more protection led by copyright legislation”.
And this, he continues, “suggests – consistent with most speculation – that a DMCA-style bill could be coming to Canada within a matter of weeks.”
That ringing sound you can hear comes from movie and music industry lobbyists cashing in their rewards for a good job well done.

The laws may well be ignorable, but what scares me is what the government will be able to put in place in order to make sure we obey those laws.
We will all be under watch – by law.
Won’t this stifle free speech on the Internet? Wouldn’t it be in the best interest of the government if we were a little less talkative on the internet?

Anyone who has bothered to follow the DMCA ever since it was originally created must surely realize by now that the whole thing is a complete joke, and for many reasons. Besides that, I really want to know why our government feels we here in Canada need to be more like our neighbors to the south. Being more like America is that absolute LAST thing we Canadians should be striving towards. Oh well, guess all I can do is make sure the wife and I don’t vote for Harper again when that time comes around once more. When I was a little boy I asked my mom why we aren’t American too, since we are so alike to them. The look of shock and horror on her face said it all, and I never asked that question again. As I grew up and learned why Canada is such a great country to be a citizen of, and understood my place within it with a growing sense of pride, it became very clear to me why we do NOT want to be anything like America, or any other country for that matter. In the past decade or so however, that sense of pride has been slowly transmuting into a sense of disgust, especially after reading this article. Sigh… idiots the lot of them. I hope they all get what they deserve in the end.
