Quarter of a million unlocked iPhones!

p2pnet news | Mobiles:- More than a quarter of a million people have so far bought iPhones —- and promptly unlocked them.

Apple itself made the admission as it informed an underwhelmed world it’s sold 1.4 million of the DRM-ed phones.

That’s a, “staggering 18 per cent of buyers who’ve chosen not to tether themselves to AT&T’s cellular network,” says The Register, going on:

“It’s no great surprise to learn that the iPhone experienced a significant sales hike immediately after Apple cut the price of the 8GB model from $599 to $399 and began selling off its remaining stock of 4GB models – now discontinued – for even less.

Adds the post:

Apple yesterday reiterated its plan to sell 10m iPhones during the handset’s first year, so unless it really does manage to lock out the unlockers – the latest firmware, 1.1.1, tried and subsequently failed to do so – and overseas buyers follow the example of US consumers, the company could end up with 1.8m iPhones running on other networks.

Indeed, with Orange France committed by law to offering unlocked iPhones and to unlock iPhones, at the buyer’s request, after six months, the figure could be much higher.

And that doesn’t even take into account Life with Toc2rta and exploits by the likes of the automated iPod Touch jailbreaking application designed for the Mac, written by a 13-year-old!

iJailBreak only works on Intel Macs from the moment, but if you feel like a little experimentation, “for all those who were interested in how we did it” Niacin has released the source code saying it’ll work on iTouch/iPhone firmware 1.0.2 and 1.1.1.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

ATT actually SBC/Cingular that fucked up their brand name so bad that they have to abadon it is such a crappy company that it is not surprising that people escape them.

Don’t do business with AT&T. THEY SUCKS!

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Why would anyone be the least bit surprised at this, considering the amount of bad publicity AT&T received when it was revealed they played a part in the illegal wiretapping?

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Why would ANYONE want a phone that you can only have ONE PROVIDER of service?

Some people must have a screw loose to buy an iphone in the first place knowing how restrictive it is.

Fuck the iphone. No one is going to tell me what provider I can have. No one. That includes apple and AT&T!
