Taliban adherents have long recognised the Power of the Net, and now the Vatican in Rome has decided to enlist its support in the Vatican’s first online sainthood campaign.
In a bid to motivate online Catholics into joining the movement to have the late Pope John Paul II canonised with almost indecent haste, the Powers that Be in Rome won had launched the “Welcome to the Santo Subito! DVD web site,” Santo Subito meaning ‘Make him a saint quickly’.
“Would you like Pope John Paul II to be proclaimed a Saint immediately?” – asks the site, “Would you like Pope John Paul II to be proclaimed Patron and Protector?”

he current Pope, Benedict XVI, “fast-tracked John Paul’s path to sainthood when he waived the normal five-year waiting period in the beatification process,” observes Guardian Unlimited, going on:
“Three hundred years ago the Vatican used to make people a saint if people stood up and shouted for it and they want to resurrect this idea of canonisation by acclamation,” said a Vatican source. “What better way to do it than by a music film like this and using the internet to push his canonisation?”
