Sasser: still on the rampage
p2pnet.net News:- Up 80% of systems bitten by the Sasser e-worm were home users and students, says McAfee.
In terms of internet safety, it poses a much greater problem than compromised corporate computers, says Vincent Gullotto, vp of Network Associates’ McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team, quoted in a silicon.com story here.
"The problem is that most of those infections are not going away any time soon," adds Gullotto.
"Those people don’t generally know what to do."
Sasser is a self-executing network worm. Unfortunately, though, this doesn’t mean it’s suicidal. Rather, it means you don’t have to do anything to set it off and unlike most of the other deadly e-bugs that have been appearing lately, it doesn’t need email to spread.
Instead, it moves around online thanks to the gaping Microsoft Windows vulnerability MS04-011.
A free tool to remove the Sasser.A and Sasser.B worms is available here.
