Demonoid offline. Again. CRIA. Again.

p2pnet news | Music:- “The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

That’s the current message on the Demonoid site at 4:28 am PST.

Again.

The CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association of America), the pale Canadian clone of Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), which normally confines itself to unsupported puffery, has been muscling Canada’s Demonoid for some time and the site has been repeatedly going on and off-line.

Nor is Demonoid alone.

Although Quebec’s ADISQ (Association québécoise de l’industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) isn’t at all sure suing file sharers is the way to go, it seems sites are fair game.

Go after torrent trackers, says the organization and with that in mind, QuebecTorrent was also the recipient of Cease and Desist demands.

Meanwhile, how long will Demonoid stay down?

Stay tuned.

(Thanks, Marie-Jose)

    anyway,

    copypasta from torrentfreak:

A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”

  2. Jay Says:

I think these torrent tracker sites need to think about setting up shop in countries like Costa Rica. If they can have internet gambling sites there and those are illegal in the Us, Canada and lots of other countries, why not set up trackers there.

File sharing isnt gonna stop. One site gets taken down 6 popup to replace it. I remember when the only place was Suprnova, now there are dozens and dozens.

And I find it ironic that the Canadian record companies made a profit last year. http://www.p2pnet.net/story/13922 Oh yeah except for those supported by the CRIA they dropped 5.6% I know of the @30 cds I purchased last year, all were indie labels with no support from either the CRIA or the RIAA. And I probably wouldnt have even bought those if I hadnt first heard about them through torrent sites and other methods of getting music free online.

And why hasnt the CRIA even bragged about it triumphs on their site?????

  3. Eric Says:

For me, Demonoid replaced another torrent site about 3-4 years ago that had been shut down by court order. If Demonoid goes, there’ll be another one to go to. There always has been.

And by the way, CRIA, you have no jurisdiction over all the US and European citizens using Demonoid, so hands off!

  4. Reader's Write Says:

It’s a private tracker anyway. I never managed to get an account with them. So it doesn’t bother me at all.

  5. ali Says:

what we get from either isohunt or mininova are almost all demonoid stamped. So it DOES bother you in a way too.

  6. StafMaN Says:

My respect goes to all sites and to all p2p :)
As a massive Demonoid fan (amongst others), I will miss it while its offline
    Buuuuuuuut……
My d/l’s are still comin’, my uploads are still goin’
    Ya can’t stop da masses!!

    One Love

  7. this sucks Says:

Call these assholes and tell them what you think.
    CRIA phone number +14169677272

  8. Meh Says:

This stinks :| I hope it comes back soon! ^_^

  9. nobody Says:

    Reader’s Write @ 11/9/2007 4:12PM:

You are dumb. It has never been a private tracker. Anybody can browse and download. The only thing private about it was requiring an account to _upload_ a torrent.

  10. Reader's Write Says:

my bit torrent says that there is a problem connecting to the demonoid torrent tracker – connection refused

  11. Rez Says:

    @nobody
You have to have an account to download any torrents on demonoid… unless I lead a completely fucked up life and imagined all those times I was forced to login. :-p

  12. Reader's Write Says:

    CRIA…Fuck You!!!!
Its like trying to kill the Hydra with a blunt plastic Spork.
Find something more meaningful to do with your pathetic waste of space lives.
    Peace out.

  13. Dreddsnik Says:

    Rez,
I have always had to login as well.
I don’t think ‘Nobody’ has ever actually visited Demonoid.
He/She just wanted an opportunity to call someone a name,
    to start a flame war.

    I wouldn’t bite ;)

  14. Reader's Write Says:

you were able to browse, couldn’t seach and were limited to 3 downloads a week w/o logging on. they would track your downloads through cookies or IP and also post a ratio. that’s how I downloaded until they had an open registration period.

  15. Zorg Says:

Without a login: Browse torrents up to a week old and No search function.

  16. Skylighter Says:

Man, this bites, I have been an avid Demonoid user for years, and am saddened this has happened again. I really hope they come back up soon . . or ever.

  17. Downloader Says:

Demonoid is a semi private tracker…..If you are not a member…..you can download up to 3 torrents in one week, (new torrents only)……If you try to download torrents more than a couple of weeks old…..or want to download more than 3 in one week….(you must be a member).

  18. DEMONOID SERVER Says:

MAN i miss demonoid thts all i would ever get downloads from saved alot of trouble of the downloads not bein fake/infected etc. to bad i cant trade my soul to let demonoid stay on forever cuz i would in a heart beat

  19. f4te Says:

shiit i hate that demonoid is gone. i don’t have much else to say other than on the off chance that deimos is reading this:
your site kicks ass, and more people than you think will miss it if you guys dissapear. i’m a canadian and am ridiculously pissed that our wonderful nation did this to such an amazing site, and i apologize on behalf of all canadian pirates. we salute you.

  20. Reader's Write Says:

demonoid is a semi private website. A purely public tracker if you could get the demonoid torrents off of isohunt you could d/l as many as you wanted period without requiring an account

  21. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

Ali is right, a LOT of decent stuff trickles down from Demonoid to mininova; it seems like a number of decent people re seed demonoid stuff there. Having said that, killing off Demonoid will no more kill off p2p than killing napster did; the p2p Hydra will just grow another head.

  22. R.I.P. Says:

I liked the site so much, I became a donor.

    Napster->Audiogalaxy->Soulseek->Demonoid->?

  23. Scott Says:

Well, Demonoid has been down before and come back each time. I hope this time is the same. I have never found a site I like as much as demonoid. I have found torrents I wanted (and many more I would have liked, but couldn’t access) elsewhere but always uploaded at Demonoid.

I have shared over 100 torrents there, and not one was illegal. I am sad that I cannot do so now. I had a nearly 10/1 upload to download ratio too.

Oh well, I will wait patiently for their return. Good luck deimos. We’re all pulling for you!

  24. KD Says:

no one else has the quantity of lossless audio, as well as the interface, of Demonoid. even a temporary loss is already being missed by me.

  25. DemonXstreeM Says:

O’ Demonoid, ‘Sweet Demonoid’ O’ Where art thou be. Come back to me by beloved Demonoid; that we may be together again and that I may surf you almost add free pages. And once again may I share with you, share with me, with us all that which may be!

p.s. props to Adblock & Firefox

    Thx, DXS

  26. Gobbledeegoop Says:

I gotta say, with the recent death of demonoid and oink, I think that what we really need is a new format of sharing files, basically, graduate from using torrents which the RIAA and CRIA have obviously finally figured out. The use of another file will prolong our desire to illegally own anything that is blatantly overpriced. I only wish we could download gasoline, and save my ass more money.

  27. Frontal Says:

move to Demonoid servers to Maldives!! we got no copyright laws here so nobody can mess with ya! :D

  28. AIPPLE Says:

MALDIEVES? IS THAT THE FALKLAND ISLANDS

    I THOUGHT SO

  29. Canadian Bacon Expose Says:

hey folk this a work in progress, only one but watch how many move through
    CRIA 1p range
    CRIA:69.0.0.1-69.255.255.254

  30. yxifix Says:

no, Maldives are in Indian ocean not far from the coast of India. Falklands are called Malvines (I think only by Argentinians)
