iTunes non-DRM outsell DRM

p2pnet news | Music:- Here’s irony for you.
Apple DRM King Steve Jobs introduced de-DRMed iTunes downoads, trying to charge extra for them.
That didn’t work so he was forced to pull the cost back to the same rip-off price as the polluted tracks, namely, $1 plus per download.
Now, “the UK’s music store 7 Digital, which has a mixed library of DRM protected and DRM-free music, has revealed that its store’s DRM-free tracks outsells DRM protected tracks 4 to 1, which means that DRM-free music accounts for 80% of its sales,” says CD Freaks.
“7 Digital has noticed one other interesting difference in the behaviour of customers when it comes to DRM-free tracks in that they are more likely to buy albums than those purchasing DRM protected tracks. 70% of its MP3 sales are part of full album downloads, which means that DRM-free tracks are a benefit for artists and labels interested in selling more full albums.”
Of the members of the Big 4 organised music cartel, only EMI and Vivendi Universal have so far abandoned DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control.
Warner Music and Sony BMG are still huffing and puffing.
(Thanks, Mike)

Hopefully we will see the DRM also come off movie discs. In particular, the “strong” main course of AACS DRM with a side dish of BD+ has been handily laid waste by Slysoft. DRM is snake oil sold to Big Media and the sooner they realise it the better.
There are two inherent flaws with it:
1 You cannot give someone the key to unlock encrypted content, but “authorise” them to use it in only one way, ie your way and to guarantee they won’t find a way round your restriction, err sorry, Digital Consumer Enablement. (GAG, SPLUTTER)
2 Anything that can be displayed or heard, can be copied. Period.
