Mounties: no interest in P2P downloaders
p2pnet news | Music:- Although in the US copright infringement, a purely civil matter, has been all-but elevated to the level of murder and rape, in Canada, the Mounties have decided they have better things to do than follow the example of the Department of Justice in the US.
The DoJ is now acting as a taxpayer funded corporate copyright enforcement agency on behalf of Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG.
However, Canadians downloading for personal use are off the Royal Canadian Mounted Police target list, senior RCMP officer Christmas Hilaire told Le Devior.
The decion almost accords with the ADISQ’s (Association québécoise de l’industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) view.
It, “isn’t at all sure suing file sharers is the way to go,” posted p2pnet recently.
Instead, go after torrent trackers, says the organization.
To make things even worse from the Big 4 perspective, a new Canadian government study says file-sharing not only doesn’t lead to a drop in CD sales, it might even encourage downloaders to buy more CDs.

It’s good to hear that our federal law enforcers have some common sense.
