Hand over UW student IDs: RIAA demand

p2pnet news | RIAA News:- With the dangerous (for the RIAA) George Washington University ‘John Doe’ case in the background, a US district judge has granted Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG’s RIAA a subpoena so it can demand information on 56 University of Wisconsin System students accused of illegally downloading music.
In the Washington case, on her own initiative, judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ordered the plaintiffs to show cause why the ex parte discovery order shouldn’t be vacated, why the subpoena shouldn’t be quashed, and why the ruling shouldn’t apply to ALL of the defendants.
In other words, put up, or shut up, the RIAA was told.
Now, says the Badger Herald, a subpoena, “identifies 24 UW-Madison, 12 UW-Stout, eight UW-Stevens Point, eight UW-Milwaukee, three UW-Eau Claire and one UW-Whitewater students’ IP addresses”.
The story goes on:
The document grants RIAA the right to request ‘documents that identify each Doe Defendant, including the name, current and permanent addresses and telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and Media Access Control addresses for each Defendant.’
The subpoena may also seek all documents and electronically stored information relating to the assignment of any IP address that UW cannot link to a specific Doe Defendant.
Will UW cower to the RIAA like so many other American universities across the country have done?
Or will it follow the example of the University of Oregon and act on behalf of the students instead of the members of the Big 4 organise music cartel?
Says the the Badger Herald, “UW Division of Information Technology communications manager Brian Rust said he had not heard of the subpoena yet, but at the end of last week, received three preservation notices requesting DoIT to keep records of students’ IP addresses, which could have been ‘in anticipation to receiving subpoenas’.”
“Rust said upon receiving a request from RIAA supported by a subpoena, UW would follow the judge’s decision,” adds the story.
Stay tuned.

I don’t know why the university has to give any log info away. They just have to say that they don’t have this information. They don’t haver to keep any log. Even if they do they don’t have to say it. My apache server does not log anything. Why should it? It save somme power and some disk space. And you know what? It’s not going to change.
