Sony slashes PS3 dev kit price
p2pnet news | Games:- Under heavy pressure from Nintendo’s Wii, Sony Computer Entertainment has been forced to make a Wii adjustment to the price of a software development kit for its struggling PlayStation 3 in half.
Actually, it’s not wee at all. In fact, the PS3 development package will now cost $10,250 in North America, 950,000 yen ($8,600) in Japan and 7,500 euros ($11,250) in Europe, says Associated Press.
The PS3 itself was also recently reduced to $500 from the previous $600,
Boosting PS3 sales is crucial for Sony’s overall business strategy because it also supports the Blu-ray disc next-generation video, which is vying with the rival HD-DVD format, says the story.
There have been no price cuts on the Wii, going for about $250 in North America, 249 euros ($370) in Europe and 25,000 yen ($230) in Japan, says AP.
“The PlayStation 3 struggled out of the gate a year ago, getting outsold by Japanese rival Nintendo, which released the Wii in the United States just two days after Sony released the PS3,” says the San Francisco Chronicle, going on:
“At the end of October, the PS3 has sold 2 million units in the United States, compared with 5 million units for the Wii and 7.2 million units for the Xbox 360.”
Sony officials are hoping a new ad campaign, “the largest Sony has undertaken for a console,” says the story, will help bring the consul into favour with gamers.
Whether that happens or not, “There are still plenty of challenges ahead for the PlayStation 3,” says the Chronicle, adding:
“The Xbox 360 has higher-rated games, and the Wii still is the hottest selling platform, with increasing support from independent developers. Neither system is expected to let up in the face of renewed competition from Sony.”

What about an ad campaign about Sony rootkit practices? Hopefully, this should turn more people away from Sony.

I hate Sony as much as the next person here but let’s boycott ALL companies and products with DRM, watermarks and all other restrictions.
I’m so sick of people coming here bashing Sony then running out and buying DRM crud from Trashiba, Microslop and Crapple.
At least the rootkit can be formatted away. Microsoft’s trusted computing is MUCH worse.
Why do you let other companies get away with restricting OUR legally paid for property?!!! Is it brainwashed fanboy stupidity? BOYCOTT ALL RESTICTIONS MANAGEMENT!!!

^Go ahead, boycott everything that restricts what you can do with it, you’ll just be sitting in an empty room staring at the wall.

^Go ahead buy stuff that restricts what you can do with it. You’ll just be staring at a blank screen, then what’s the point of having all that fancy crap? Now if ALL of us boycott and the electronics manufacturers see profits take a nosedive they’ll stop including restrictions. OH but I guess we’re only boycotting SONY.

I dispise the retarded immature microsoft “Fanboys” like yourself as well- completely turning me away from the system. I also hate microsoft in general…
I respect that you love your 360, but honestly…. shut the hell up.
