Anne Frank’s tree: the last day

p2pnet news | Freedom:- The Freedom Writers are a group of Long Beach, California teenagers and their teacher, Erin Gruwell.

They started keeping diaries of what was happening in their daily lives and their journals quite literally helped them to find themselves, to learn to live with each other and their extreme differences, and to come to terms with the reality of their lives.

Among their most important influences was the Diary of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl who kept a daily journal of her life while she, her family and four friends hid in constant terror an Amsterdam attic during the German occupation of Holland in World War II.

“After two years in hiding the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps,” says the Wikipedia. “Seven months after her arrest, Frank died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp within days of her sister, Margot Frank.”

One of the only things and she see from her window was a 150-year-old horse chestnut tree, and it featured prominently in her diary.

Now the efforts of campaigners notwithstanding, Amsterdam city council has given the order to fell the Anne Frank Tree, “after tests two months ago showed that it was in such a bad condition that the felling could not be put off any longer,” says The Telegraph.

But Anne Frank House, the museum based in her former hiding place, “has promised that the tree will live on.,” says the story, adding:

“After the felling, a graft from the original will be put in its place,” said a spoikesman. “In this way the tree, which is so closely connected with the memory of Anne Frank, will live on.”

On May 13, 1944 Anne wrote in her diary, “Our chestnut tree is in full bloom,” says the web cam site showing the tree.
“It’s covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year.”

The tree stands close to the secret annex in the back garden of the Prinsengracht, Westermarkt and Keizersgracht.

“The web cam images offer a unique view of the secret annex” and, “On the right you can see the tree that Anne wrote about.”

But only until tomorrow. It’ll be cut down on November 21 …..
