According to the article, the reason you don't see many Tivos in Canada is because retailers are scared of copyright law, not because they're Tivo is a bad product. These laws could threaten generic PVRs and other cool gadgets in the future.

why would anyone want a tivo? as i understand it, one must buy a subscription in order to use it. and i've heard horror stories concerning poor service and scheduling problems.

there are plenty of dvr's and dvd recorders with HDD which include EPG (electronic program guide) without a subscription.

i'm very happy tivo is not available in my country, and doesn't look as if it ever will be. my 250GB panasonic dvd recorder w/HDD has all i need, including VPS (VideoPlus) - also for free - for when a program starts early or late.

Let's see American retailers and wholesalers made billions off the sale of VCRs, radios, records, audio tape, and portable music players. All devices the entertainment companies tried but failed to kill. Even Hollydud and the music companies made billions off these devices all because we ignored the copyright dinosaurs' whining and paranoia. How much has Canada LOST because the government bows down to the copyright dictators?
