Hollywood ‘legal’ copying CRAP

p2pnet news | Movies:- Choke, cough, cough, “Buyers of the new ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ and ‘Harry Potter’ movie DVDs will be allowed to make digital copies,” says the leader in a PC World story explaining how two Hiollywood studios are, “taking baby steps toward offering a third, legal alternative, permitting you to copy the movie to your device from the DVD itself”.
You know what the first two are —- download or copy with any one (or two
) of the various free and (non-corporate) commercial products available.
The third ‘legal option?
DRM and other Hollywood CRAP.
With Fox, get Live Free or Die Hard Collector’s Edition. And that’s all. And with Warner, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. And that’s all.
Both systems are screamingly obvious failures which won’t even get out of the gate and PC World reviews them, blow-by-blow.
But the New York Times pretty well sums them up with this. They:
… don’t offer anywhere near the same flexibility as, say, copying a CD onto your computer or iPod. The FAQ for Fox Digital Copy lays out all of the requirements and restrictions, including the fact that files will only work on Windows PlaysForSure-enabled devices, i.e. no Video iPod or PSP, or even a Zune for that matter … Also, users may have to connect to the internet to get a software update for the files to work on the computer. See the PC World review mentioned above for how it all worked in practice. Although not released yet, the Warner Brothers approach is expected to be similarly limiting.
Adds the story, “For people who play by the rules the new offerings (and their future iterations) may make life easier. But people inclined to illegally download movies or who know how to rip a DVD onto their computer probably aren’t going to change their habits.”
(Thanks again, Rob)

I’m sure he meant to say, “For people who know how to get around Hollywood’s sneaky restrictions to make legal, private copies of their DVD collection, this doesn’t affect them at all. But people who aren’t as tech-saavy and need to be spoon-fed the means and permission to archive their legally-purchased DVD library from the media conglomerates in Hollywood, have to bend over and take it.”

i play by the rules. just not the cartel’s rules.
the “rules” in my country are very clear:
ripping, sharing, copying and p2p of music and video are not illegal in my country. the law (which is new) specifically states that it is LEGAL, as long as it’s not for profit.
don’t ask me what country i’m in. i won’t say.it’s no one’s business. i don’t give that info out.
