Return of Playfair

p2pnet.net News:- PlayFair is back. Only this time it’s hymn. And it’s in a new release – 0.6.0..

PlatFair as-was is now hosted on a US site here and/or here and Anand Babu has taken official ownership of the project with FSF India providing legal support.

“This (hosting service) provider is well aware of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and DRM issues and is very much willing to defend us in case Apple threatens to bring down the site,” Babu says.

And this time, “I finally wrote a user’s manual,” says the author. “It’s available in HTML, text and PDF form. It is right now only available in CVS but I hope to ship 0.5.1 with the documentation soon, along with a bug fix or two. Stay tuned …”

0.6.0 release is pretty much a complete rewrite:

“There are no longer any non-GPL dependencies (the mp4v2 library was MPL and, thus, incompatible with the GPL). In fact, the MPEG-4 parsing is now home-grown and much more specific,” says the creator.

“Since we’re no longer using the mp4v2 library to copy the meta data from the protected AAC file, it is left fully intact, including the apple ID of the user who bought the song. This proves that our purpose is for fair use and not for ‘piracy’ and should help us in our legal battles.”

Apple has been trying to stomp PlayFair/hymn on the grounds it’s used to illegally copy and share music.

You’ll find the Source Code here (a standard “./configure ; make ; make install” source tarball for any unix-ish platform;

The Mac OS X Binary here (a binary install of the GUI version of hymn. For the command-line version, please compile from source); and,

The Windows Binary here (a binary install of the command-line version of hymn. No GUI is yet available for Windows)

Just in case, we’ve also put the Source Code here, the MAC binary here and the Windows version here.
