Chinese Net cafe staff attacked
p2pnet.net News:- Staff working at internet cafes in northwest China have quit following a "series of attacks" which were sparked when they asked for customer IDs, say reports.
"Local police said Sunday they have stepped in to investigate an assault that happened Friday night at the Sanfuwan Outlet of the Hongshulin Internet Cafe Chain, which staff said was among a series of attacks by young people at the cafe," says ChinaTechNews here.
"One of the staff, surnamed Chen, said he stopped seven or eight teenagers about to enter on the morning of May 6 because some of them looked very young. Chen asked to see their identity cards to verify their age. The teenagers refused and threatened to beat anyone who ‘dared to check identity cards’. They tried to force their way into the cafe but were stopped."
A resignation letter from employees, "listed many beating cases because of stopping young people," says Xinhuanet here.
"Their bicycle tires were deliberately damaged many times. Some even launched an online assault to the cafe’s server, cut the broadband line, input junk programs into computers and poured mineral water into displays."
No one under the age of 18 is allowed to enter a Net face and China says it plans to install a special video system in all Internet cafes nationwide by the end of 2004. "Once installed, this new surveillance system will require all Internet cafes customers to enter personal information, such as name, age, and their national citizen identification number, before they are allowed to log onto the Internet.
"New supervisory centers will also be set up around the country to monitor the online activities of Internet cafe customers. To date, Sichuan, Guangxi, Hubei, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi provinces have already completed installing this new monitoring system in all the Internet cafes within their respective jurisdictions."
China has closed more than 8,600 ‘unlicensed’ Net cafes since February and local governments across the country have been ordered not to approve Net cafe openings in residential areas, or within 200 meters of primary and high schools.
According to the General Administration for Industry and Commerce (GAIC), China’s market watchdog, "in China, many Internet cafes, especially those without licenses, admit juveniles in violation of relevant regulations and spread unhealthy online information."
