Porn, politics and Canadian copyright

p2pnet news | Politics:- During yesterday’s question period in the Canadian House of Commons, NDP MP Irene Mathyssen accused Tory MP James Moore of viewing “scantily clad” women on his laptop in the parliamentary chamber.

Describing the pic as “Playboy-type stuff,” it was a “skimpy negligee kind of thing,” she said, according to the Toronto Star.

“It was very small, and she was a brunette.”

But, “hours later, Mathyssen apologized to Moore after he explained to her that the photos she’d seen on his laptop were of his girlfriend,” says the story.

Says Moore on his site:

“Today an NDP Member of Parliament accused me of looking at an inappropriate image on my personal laptop. I did no such thing. This was a baseless personal attack and I am disappointed she resorted to such an outrageous tactic to score a headline.”

‘These are complex issues’

Not at all incidentally, “This is the message I got,” Ricardo Bortolon posted on his Back to Fair Copyright for Canada Facebook page yesterday.

“I’m pretty sure it’s authentic since it addressed specifically things I mentioned,” he says, going on to quote the letter in full, to wit:

Ricardo Bortolon

Thank you for your correspondence regarding copyright reform in Canada.

I appreciate being advised of your views and have carefully noted your comments with respect to this matter. Please be assured that the Government of Canada is aware of the sensitive nature of issues regarding digital rights management. I am working with the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry, on new copyright legislation for Canada. These are complex issues and the Government is currently considering the concerns of all Canadians as it moves forward with copyright reform.

The cultural policy objective of the Copyright Act is to ensure adequate protection for creators and cultural content as well as appropriate access for all Canadians to cultural works.

Governmental officials will continue to monitor developments around the world as they plan the next steps that Canada will take on this matter. The Government wants to ensure that the rights of Canadian creators are adequately protected by law, and that these rights are balanced with the ability of the public to access works.

Your interest in copyright reform is appreciated. Updates and further information on the ongoing copyright reform process are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage Web site at http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/ac-ca/progs/pda-cpb/index_e.cfm.

I trust that this information is useful. Please accept my best wishes.

Sincerely,

James Moore MP
