Pirates lead the way for Disney

p2pnet news | Movies:- Pirates were responsible for Disney Studios Home Entertainment, “biggest sales performance of the big three sequels that stormed the boxoffice during the summer,” says the Hollywood Reporter.

p2pnet used to run a Movies File Share Top Ten, which we hope to revive soon. And with the Big Six movie studios using their MPAA to claim they’re being ruined by p2p file sharers, “it’s interesting to note that Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest became the fastest film ever to go beyond $300 million in Canada and the US, ‘grossing an estimated $35 million in its third weekend,’ we said, quoting the Los Angeles Times.

Our story went on:

However, Pirates II is also the most downloaded movie in all three of p2pnet’s Movies File Share Top Ten charts.

But if what the MPAA says is true, how can that be?

Referring to the p2pnet charts, ‘Whatever the total number of individuals via BitTorrent, or any other P2P/file-sharing protocol, its clear that Pirates of the Caribbean is a highly popular film online,’ says Slyck, adding:

‘The fascinating aspect is while this movie in [sic] in high demand online, the excessive rate of unauthorized downloads is having no ill effect on its theatrical performance. This quandary exemplifies a growing trend in Hollywood big event movies are becoming the true money makers. Piracy-immune movies may one day be the de facto standard for theatrical release, while those more financially susceptible to unauthorized downloading will find their release in a home theater near you.”

This time around, “The third installment in the Disney franchise easily topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert DVD sales chart in its first week in stores, selling more than twice as many copies as ‘Spider-Man 3′ and significantly more DVDs than ‘Shrek the Third’ in their respective first weeks,” says the Hollywood Reporter.

Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third have, of course, both been available on the P2P networks and elsewhere since day one and that doesn’t seem to have affected their popularity.

In fact, it’s increasingly becoming clear that P2P file sharing represents a priceless form of viral marketing.

Still on Disney and Pirates, We understand now that piracy is a business model,” declared Disney co-chair Anne Sweeney last year.

How’s that?

“It exists to serve a need in the market for consumers who want TV content on demand,” she said. “Pirates compete the same way we do – through quality, price and availability. We we don`t like the model but we realise it`s competitive enough to make it a major competitor going forward.”

Its clear what the people want imo, and as normally done in those situations is to give them what they want.

change the copyright laws and viola no more pirates, do a massive investment in online content on demand for cheap money and without DRM or any other things that prevent people from having their movies on portable devices or a CD or flash devices.
The industry needs to restructure, cut out unneeded middle hands and let the internet take over most of the work.
Create official sites ala Youtube like with option to wiev movies streaming or download it (without DRM).
The industry has the possebility to create awesome sites with all works on if they work together, with restructuring they will do it successfull, but it will take them awhile to find the “sweetspot” and DRM is the sourspot, eventualy they will realize this..
With changes on copyright laws for digital content, industry restructure and “mind set” changes, optimisations and a time to find the sweet spot, there will be no more problems.
Pre-realeased material is within the industry, it is them who have to change. together with “cam” on cinema its the biggest things that “hurt” them.

I believe eventualy in the future the dinosaur will be reborn, and consumers will be right once again and the industry will follow the consumers and not try to fight them. a democratic country will allow for sutch developments, the people is “almost” always right, and we all want entertainment so for the industry to adapt to the consumers and by that way reduce piracy is the only way to go.
It is “stupid” and upsetting to fight against consumers will, every indusrty in the world have adapted to its consumers in big changes, why should the movie/music industry be any different and be allowed immunity to consumer habit changes? why should laws protect industry ways that are clearly not what the consumer wants and that is highly outdated for aour modern age.

I speak this not for America but for the global industry. The ways of the past is not going to get better, they are going to get worse and in industry “war” against consumers only both sides are hurt. Its time to Adapt..

yeah, but the problem now is those steering the dinosaur are already counting the bonuses they will get when they turn the 90001 billion dollars they estimate lost to pirates into cash. I know it’s not going to happen, you know it;s not going to happen, but the suits are running around like cartoon characters with $$’s in their eyes.

    What about this one:

I’m getting tired of this line of work. The hours are long, the day is hard, and my a$$ is sore. Is there any way we can pay lawyers to steal for us?
