Big Music CD sales plummet

p2pnet news | Music:- With Christmas a-comin’ the geese may be getting fat, but Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG, the members of the Big 4 organised music cartel, are having a thin time of it.
CD sales are down, way down, says Pali Research analyst Rich Greenfield.
And to add a further chill to the already bleak picture for the Big 4, of the eight albums with sales of more than 100,000 in the week ended December 9, four had zip to do with the major labels, he posts.
The Eagles and Garth Brooks “went direct to Wal-Mart and two were Disney titles,” Greenfield says, going on:
“In 2006, the last six weeks of the year (starting with Thanksgiving week) comprised 21% of total 2006 CD sales (based on Nielsen/Soundscan data). During the first three weeks of that same period in 2007 CD unit sales are down over 22%.”
And Greenfield expects the “dramatic year-over-year declines to continue” through the rest of the holiday 2007 season for the music industry.
“We believe the end of year fall-off in CD sales will drive large retailers to meaningfully reduce floor space in 2008 (not to mention pressuring wholesale pricing),” he adds.
Through their RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the Big 4 recently made it clear they expect their customers to try to rob them blind over the Christmas season.
And with that in mind, as part of their sue ‘em all marketing campaign, they’re going after the music buying public in general and students in particular.
Could their vicious and unrelenting attacks on their own customers have anything to do with plummeting sales, do you think?

Of course they are going to claim it’s all due to p2p.
An increasingly successful boycott has nothing to do with it.
Alienating current and future customers has nothing to do with it.
Alternative forms of entertainment ( independents, consoles etc .)
have nothing to do with it.
It’s ALL because of p2p.
At least, thats what major media will be pumping out on their
owners behalf .. I guarantee it.

Continue the boycott and expend it further. This is what I am doing evey day convincing people not to buy anyshit from these parasites and it is getting easier and easier as they behavior is more and more known.
The more outrageous they are the easier it is to bring them down!
Only 3 years ago when trying to tell people about this it was like this:
The 4 majors? What 4 majors? What law suits? Spying on who? How? Copyright what? What Infringment?
Am I infringing? What pirates ? Where? and so forth.
Now they know: Ok! I will not buy any CD or DVD! Howe long we have to do this? Until they are out of business? Ok!

The funy thing is that now I am actually buying more CDs than before because I am bying indies and they are less than half price so I can afford more. They sound better (With the exception of Sony/Classical and DECCA/London.)
I am in classical music so sound quality is a premium and frankly compressed wma or mp3 does not cut it. CD bearly make it and I will hapilly switch to a higher resolution format for my big high end monster stereo.

This is just awesome! I haven’t purchased any CDs/DVDs (or Sony products) in years and will continue not to buy anything from these slimy bastards. This is EXACTLY what the music industry deserves. Now we need to start getting people to quit buying DVDs as well…..especially the DRM-laden HD formats. I’m so excited I may have to rub one out after I’m done typing!

I am not bying Sony electronic either just in case they might slam a root kit or something in a laptop or an audio-video system. May be their shit might send some power surge through you home electrical system or something!

I mean that the sound quality of Sony/Classical and DECCA/London was good but I don’t buy an RIAA or CRIA members stuff AT ALL! this is why I am buying indies only now and it is less than half price!

Hey good news! With reports that at least 65% of US households are now into buying games the public is turning to other forms of entertainment. You see, the music industry isn’t a must have for their product lines. Every one is tired of the ripp off from artist to customer. They have already killed the support industry because they wanted all the money by trying digital sales. Sales that I might add aren’t working too well with the DRM included as well as the massive bad publicity they have made for themselves with sue’em. That could not make me happier to hear that once again they are doing poorly.
Face it, the discretionary income of families are getting worse. They are looking for more bang for the buck. That means the continual rip off like music or poorly made movies will suffer the most. It will not be long I would imagine before we hear Hollydud echoing this same poor sales. Only main difference here is that Hollydud hasn’t been on quite the same rampage that the music industry has with suing their customers and trumpeting about it afterwards.
People are fed up with the greed surrounding the music labels and are telling them so in the best way they can; No Sales.

How very naive! What a very biased web-site which promotes not news buy some idiotic rhetoric coming from some computer fans! So funny that people have no problem paying up to $300-$600 dollars for gadgets from Apple but complain about paying about $12.99 for a CD!
It is not about the industry suing customers! It is about people who claim to be “music fans” abusing the rights of artist who create the music. Making a CD for a friend of music you legally own is different than uploading it on a network for millions of people to download! That is called distribution people! The thing that blows my mind is that people think it is their “birth right” to have music for nothing and try to blame the industry for ripping off artists.
Like all industry there are good and bad people but the vast majority of people in music are great people! After reading these comments I really have to laugh! So your boycott is going to break Hollywood? These corporations have withstood the great depression, wall street stock crashes and many other events!
Rather than trying to focus on a ridiculous cause like this why not try focusing on bigger problems we have in this country like the homeless or education? The world would be a better place

There used to be radio to freely distribute music that DJs thought people would like. Radio isn’t programmed by anyone who cares about what people like anymore, it’s programmed by researchers who run simulated listening situations to see what people will put up with before they change the channel.
Record labels feed the above bullshit by throwing promotional money at “product” made by pliable fame-seekers and “hit-maker” producers.
P2P comes along and totally fucks up that formula.
