p2pnet special | Music:- Here’s the unique p2pnet File Share Top Ten —- download charts arriving every Saturday.
The data come from BigChampagne, which began collecting information from the original Napster in 2002. Today it includes data from a huge variety of download and “treaming music and video online, traditional radio, traditional “bricks and mortar” retail, and more.
Does BigChampagne collect and report information about unauthorized or illegal P2P file sharing? It does. Because whether Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG like it nor not, the vast majority of online entertainment media are now acquired for free on P2P file sharing networks.
BigChampagne constantly measures them in real time using its own proprietary systems to gather information about file sharing and searches in much the same way that search engines collect information about public web sites. But although it measures online content, it doesn’t track people.

I don’t believe that it is technically possible to do what BigChampagne claims to do, but I’m far from being an expert.
I can understand how BC might be able to list files most frequently OFFERED for download, particularly on those networks with central servers. But how could they possibly count DOWNLOADS that occur directly from peer to peer, especially on a distributed network without servers using something like kademlia protocol?
Downloads on many p2p networks obtain parts of the file from multiple uploaders. How would BC account for that?
Would those of you who are more knowledgeable care to comment? Is it technically possible? I don’t think so.

Technically, it seems possible according to http://www.bigchampagne.com/collecting.html
I don’t doubt their technology. I do doubt, however, their reliability of the data harvest.

I would expect BigChampagne to claim that it’s possible, since they make their money by selling the results of their “dynamic, simultaneous, direct monitoring presences on key network nodes.” But what the hell does that mean, and since they aren’t the NSA, how is it technically possible?
I still don’t believe it.
