p2pnet stories

p2pnet news | P2P:- This email was waiting for me when I logged on this morning:

I’m getting really tired of seeing stories by you which come from stories other people have posted. If you can’t do your own stories don’t steal from other people.

But wait! You like file sharing so stealing is a way of life for you!

Naturally, it isn’t signed and its origin is hidden.

Was this from a genuine reader or jest another yeller-belly? I only get five or six a month. Not too bad ;)

Whichever it was, here’s my response to whoever wrote the email, and anyone who’s worried about where I get some of my inspiration from :)

I started out as a reporter on a small newspaper in Kent, England, and among other things, we were taught to go through local and national publications looking for stories which might be of interest to us.

If there were, we’d follow them up, sometimes with reference to the original, sometimes not, depending on how different our story was.

So Yes, I often do stories in this way. If they’re mostly from two or three other items with not a lot of input from me, I figure linking to them in the body copy and naming the source (usually more than once) , with a second link and the headline and date at the bottom of the post, is enough.

p2pnet may be unique in that. Maybe not. But certainly, there aren’t too many other online publications which go this far.

If I come across something and develop a new and different story, I link to the original source only.

If I run a story or research paper in full, it’s always with the prior permission of the author(s) unless, like all p2pnet stories, it’s Creative Commons, or it’s from a site which clearly says the post can be reproduced. But even then, nine point nine times out of ten, I still contact the author to make sure it’s okay.

So that’s where it’s at.

Cheers!

Jon

I dont mind one bit reading stories here that are from other sources. Pretty much all the time it says it is from another source. I consider this site a place to go to find news stories that are gathered from around the world either because Jon finds them interesting or he thinks a reader that comes here might find it interesting.

I pretty much come to this site every day. And I do hit up a few of the other news sites to and often find the same stories there too.

Its like the above post said about the AP. CNN, MSNMC, ABC, CBS etc. all are gonna have some of the same news stories and yes most the time it says -AP or -Assoicated Press next to it.

Keep up the good work Jon and hope you and the family have a good holiday and happy new year.

    -Jay

In my opinion, I think that email may be from our “Sam” friend.

I think Spam I Am really needs to get a life.
