Windows Home Server file corruption
p2pnet news | Product News:- "When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server."
A warning on a news site?
Not exactly. It’s the headline, in big, bold black, on a Microsoft support page and it says, going on as though it’s no big deal:
When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server. Several people have reported issues after they have used the following programs to save files to their home servers:
Windows Vista Photo Gallery
Windows Live Photo Gallery
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
Microsoft Money 2007
SyncToy 2.0 Beta
Additionally, say Bill and the Boyz, "there have been customer reports of issues with Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken, and with QuickBooks program files."
But not to worry because, "Our support team is currently trying to reproduce these issues in our labs."
And, "Data integrity is of the utmost importance," says the Windows Home Server team blog, going on that it, "tackles issues around file or data corruption with extreme seriousness and urgency".
And when they see, "issues that we cannot reproduce (’repro’), we contact specific forum participants and initiate an e-mail conversation to understand the issues, environment and exact steps a user is taking."
In other words, they haven’t been able to ‘repro’ this.
So you’ll just have to stay tuned "Until an update for Windows Home Server is available".
When that might be Microsoft doesn’t appear to know.
Until then, "we recommend that do not use the programs that are listed in this article to save or to edit program-specific files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based system".
