Opera’s latest – 7.50

p2pnet.net News:- Norway’s Opera has released 7.50 for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris – and one of the most useful features of this new version is support for RSS newsfeeds, further bolstering its claim of being the fastest, best coded, small browsing application in the world.

At 3.5mb Java-less and 15.9 mb with, it has a built-in e-mail client with fast content search, a contact dbase, newsreader, automatic filtering and a spellchecker and, it says, the debuting chat client is IRC-compatible and supports both private and group chats.

AND – it’ll push pop-ups to the background, or not show them at all.

Also interesting is Opera’s new marketing approach to Bill and the Boyz over in Redmond.

"Most Internet users are browsing slowly and conducting other Internet activities with applications that should have been retired years ago," it says, mentioning no names.

But wait! It mentions names : )

"Internet Explorer is an aged application that Microsoft has not given a major update in years, and according to press reports they are not planning to upgrade it in the near future," says Opera ceo Jon S. von Tetzchner, going on:

Aged app, eh? That’s fighting talk. heh

Verisn 7 users get a free upgrade.

For new users, the free version has sponsored advertising in the user interface, but $39 gets rid of that. If you’re a registered user of an older version, an upgrade to a newer version on the same platform costs $15. If you bought Opera 6 during the Power Kit campaign, or thereafter for $29, you’re entitled to a free upgrade to Opera 7 for Windows and Linux.

The ads aren’t that intrusive, though, for people looking to save their hard-earned cash.

Opera’s browser technology is cross-platform and modular, and currently available on the following operating systems: Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Symbian OS, QNX, TRON, FreeBSD, Solaris and Mediahighway.

opera is ok, but it’s not good enough compared to mozilla firefox to be worth paying for, and with so many websites designed to require a good viewing area, putting up with the ad is a nuisance. the ie distributed with sp2 has been upgraded significantly and apparently users are experiencing much better browsing so i’m not sure if they will get themselves into trouble with those apparently inaccurate comments. i still won’t be using ie though!

Thanks so much for the info, I LOVE opera, it’s all I use especially for having to switch back to dialup. I’ll make sure to upgrade today :)

yes. I have got hooked up on opera for about a year now.

I quit explorer because of all the crashing and took up Netscape. But it was good but just too heavy. Then tried opera and knew this browser is for me from day one.

The tabbed browsing and those small options like increase font sizes, quick download and “paste and go” options are jewels. The same is with the short cuts. Its very unfortunate that some sites do not support opera. Then I generally to Mozilla firefox or as the last option the IE.

I think this is the greatest browser of all. About the small advertisements on the free option, well they have make some money don?t they?

    me too got hooked !..

And u are right that opera doesnot open certain sites properly !.. maybe the developers should know that. And one more thing about the interface of opera is that when it is in its default settings. it occupies a lot of screenspace even when maximized .
This discourages most of the new users from using it.. its big fonts.. are a bit scary too..
I still have mozilla firefox as an alternative to opera !. :)

Opera is great just for the popup blocker. Yeah, I know you can get something like that for free, but I’ve noticed that ads are starting to come through even what was a very strong block a few months ago.
