Counterfeit DVD bust
p2pnet news | Crime:- US police arrested an as-yet and identified 27-year-old man on suspicion of counterfeiting DVDs after sheriff’s deputies found 50,000 copies of first-run movies in his home.
"The DVDs had a street value of $250,000, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Don Morrissey," says the Mercury News, going on:
"Along with the many boxes of blank and reproduced DVDs, deputies also found several sophisticated DVD copying machines in the man’s home. The man, according to Morrissey, admitted to reproducing the movies and selling the illegal copies."
The discovery and arrest, "come on the heels of another major DVD counterfeiting operation that was uncovered in mid-December in San Jose," adds the story.

So even the cops admit the value of a homemade dvd is only 5 bucks. Now subtract the cost of the blank, labor and amortise the fabrication equipment and you see nobody gets rich with a scheme like this. You gotta wonder where he plans to wholesale his “50,000″ dvds.

when the company i work for got its cd/dvds published for full color print dvdcase, inlay and full color disk for 10,000 including delivery(the expensive part) it came to about $1.10 per disk with no delivery its more like $0.7 this also included master disk production
so even amortising for equipment and labour(himself) there is no reason to believe he could not burn dvd’s for less than $1.5 even when he has to use more electricity.(burning disks instead of printed from master)
so $5 – $1.5 = $3.5 $3.5*50,000 = $175,000
not bad as what was found will probably be only a few months supply. even if he has to pay a few imagrents to do the actual selling.
