‘Dutch RIAA’ loses MP3 fight
p2pnet news | RIAA News:- "The Hague – possibly best known as the site of international war crimes trials – was the site of a very different sort of trial Tuesday, with the Dutch RIAA being soundly defeated in their attempts to raise taxes on MP3 players."
The quote is the intro to a Linux Journal story which in turn draws from a Reuters item which says Norma, the ‘Dutch RIAA,’ lost its court bid to remove a government block on new levies on MP3 media players.
"The court in The Hague upheld a government freeze on moves to impose new levies, a justice ministry spokesman said," according to reuters, which goes on:.
The Netherlands already has a levy on blank CDs and DVDs but the government says the artists’ rights bodies were not distributing the cash efficiently and wanted the problems solved before new levies were created.
"You cannot give such a system the responsibility for a new levy if you know that it is not working properly," Reuters has a justice ministry spokesman saying.
