--It took me 3 working days to deal with the Sasser virus on all my computers at work.

Really? So, just as a guess, how long would it have taken you to patch the PCs in question if you would have done so prior to the worm's release? Just a guess, but I'm thinking that it would have been much faster.

--The campus where I am at was nearly shut down because of the virus.

If I were in your place, I wouldn't be bragging about my incompetence (or laziness if you don't like the sting of the other label).

--That little f*cker should get a huge fine and 5-10 years in jail.

And what would the appropriate punishment for your discretion be? After all, the means for prevention was available long before the worm was released.

--That will hwlp to prevent some virus writers in the future.

And how do you justify that statement? Has any of the previous fines and/or sentences handed down to previous 'virus writers' (overlooking the fact that this was actually classified as a 'worm' for a moment) been proven to stop attacks in the past? Show me documented evidence of such and I will gladly retract this part of my thought process. That is about as useful as stating that higher traffic fines given to one driver will help prevent the next guy/gal that is in a hurry from speeding. Unless you catch them all (which they usually don't) it won't do a thing to stop the determined.

--Especially ones like this clown that dont know what the hell they are doing.

Doesn't know what he's doing?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they give him credit for a previously released "bug' as well? I'm sure that would classify as 'dumb luck' in your books, right?

--You people have no idea the cost these virus attacks have around the world in terms of lost work and aggravation.

Oh, actually I do. I have been in both environments. Both being the company that was well repaired and pro-active and the ones that were not. The funny thing is how the ones that got bit by oversight once are usually the same ones that get bitten the second, third, forth.... times. Strange how that happens. It seems the only way to keep it from happening is to get rid of the lazy SOB that keeps allowing it to happen and get someone hired in that takes a pro-active stance on this stuff.

--I hope they throw him in jail for 10 years.
You would. Perhaps that small gesture might help to over-shadow the obvious neglect you have shown for your network.

For your sake, I sure hope so...

PS. Spell check is a free utility that comes with most word processing software these days. You should really take advantage of it. It might make you look a little more intelligent.

Think before you're about to post something that makes no sense.

Hi. I killed a bunch of people 'cause I pointed the gun, but didn't realize it was loaded. Silly me, I know! I tried to make things better by making a super duper 'suction' gun, that would take the bullets out. But, damn, I killed a whole lot more people 'cause basically I'm an idiot! Anyhow, since at least I tried, can you guys please send me money? It really was an accident. I thought I knew about guns and their affect, but, I sure am an idiot! If I promise to never use a gun again, please send me money so I can spend it. PLEASE?

In one hand, Sven cost buisness money. In the other hand, Sven made business money. Not too many people on one hand can complain, but the other they could kill.

Hmmm... Well, at least I'm not in the killing hand :)

Thanks Sven!!!

Would it be better to live with those vulnerabilities in your unstable OSs, and then find out one day that someone has maliciously attacked your PC for real damage, or would you prefer a "skript kiddie" to highlight it so Microsoft can fix it? Microsoft have a lot to answer for.

If a "skript kiddie" can download someone, not know how to use it correctly, and produce something as devistating as Sasser, isn't that just an indication of what a joke those "house of straw" OSs from Microsoft are?

Move your clients to a more secure OS, like OS X, BSD, or Linux (the main ones, not all of them). You'll still have to deal with viruses, worms, torjans, etc... but they'll be less frequent, and usually the damage will be contained.

By that statement, a mass murderer would just be thinning the crowd.

Maybe 10yrs of community service, and a fine in proportion to the damage caused. So in this case, a lot.

It's the IT Manager for your department who should be going to jail. If people applied the security patches, there wouldn't be a problem. And HE should pay back the $200,000!!

Here's a quote from what someone posted here earlier;

"Keep in mind that the Internet was originally intended for the free exchange of information. In some ways virus attacks, such as the Sasser Worm, are a price you pay for using an entity for profit that was not designed with this intention in mind."

I don't think this means that there should be no punishment for this virus writer, but he should not have to go to jail or face millions of dollars in fines. Make him do community service work.

If I am blaming the victims as you suggest I must also be blaming myself as I work at a Canadian University as a computer-tech. Granted the Sasser virus was a nuisance. I worked a few extra hours but managed to have a couple hundred computers fixed in that time. But I feel that it is a nuisance that comes with the trade. Not that I'm encouraging malicious behavior...But...Don't forget the roots that the computer industry has grown out of. Hackers have always been a pain in the butt, generally though they are also quite brilliant and upon reaching adulthood often shape the industry they, in there youth, were disrupting.
I don't know how much money it actually cost, but my workplace computers were a wreck for two days.

That meant two days where my colleagues and I (about 200 of us) each had to do the work of three people because of the work of this poxy German teeneager.

So that's our IT department's fault in part, I agree. But the rest of us only work here, we have no control over the IT wonks. And that's no reason for some ritalin-defficient teneager with an AOL account to come and fuck it up, for fun.

His claim to be trying to write a "white-hat" virus is obvious fucking bullshit, when he didn't have the skills do do more than download a few hack-kits and scripts. He thought he could create a virus, and get away with it.

Well he didn't get away with it and I hope they make him pay.

Prison? This little dick-dribble should be fucking crucified on television as a lesson to all oif them. I've a mind to take a day trip to Germany and tell this little shitface how I feel, personally.

The estimates are not fictional. They are based on several factors, such as:

The time it takes to clean the virus multiplied by the hourly rate of the person doing cleanup.
Companies can and often do measure how much income they make daily. Its a matter of simple math to determine how much money you lost as a result of downtime.
Other considerations are taken into effect as well, such as the impact on a business who has been struck by a virus. Naturally it affects their corporate image and makes them look amateurish, which makes customers look elsewhere.

Those are just some of the ways that a virus can cost a company money. You say that computers are just tools, however they are more than just that. They are a means of income for thousands of businesses across the world.

Your comparison of an airline crash is inaccurate - to compare a company whose entire network architecture has been taken down by a virus, you would have to say that ALL of the airplanes of any given airline crashed all at once. Given that scenario, you can easily see how this affected a company's income margin.

Even throwing all of the monetary damage aside, this person launched an attack against the world's computers. In that respect, he is no more than a common criminal and as such should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and made to pay retribution for the damage that he caused. To say that it is Microsoft's fault for producing insecure software is tantamount to blaming the girl that got raped by saying "Well, if she hadn't dressed like that, it never would have happened."

Blaming the victim(s) is never the right thing to do...

Your comparison of an airline crash is inaccurate – to compare a company whose entire network architecture has been taken down by a virus, you would have to say that ALL of the airplanes of any given airline crashed all at once. Given that scenario, you can easily see how this affected a company’s income margin.

Even throwing all of the monetary damage aside, this person launched an attack against the world’s computers. In that respect, he is no more than a common criminal and as such should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and made to pay retribution for the damage that he caused.
Blaming the victim(s) is never the right thing to do…

It took me 3 working days to deal with the Sasser virus on all my computers at work. The campus where I am at was nearly shut down because of the virus. That little fucker should get a huge fine and 5-10 years in jail. That will hwlp to prevent some virus writers in the future. Especially ones like this clown that dont know what the hell they are doing. You people have no idea the cost these virus attacks have around the world in terms of lost work and aggravation. I hope they throw him in jail for 10 years.

virus writers are just another pawn, for creating a even more secure internet, they exploit weakness and flaws that companies such as microsoft didn't bother to correct. they do things that will help people in the future. they make you want to fix things so it won't happen again. that's the whole point of pulling someone's weakness, which is to make that weakness a strong point. so if you can think correctly, you'll know that these minor damages are for the good of future purposes, but still this is just a comment.

The estimates of how much money is lost when a worm like this is un-leashed are as ludicrous and fictional...As the financial grounding of the original .com bubble. A computer is a tool, Does the airline industry speculate the mass amounts of money that an airplane would have made when it crashes...No it deals with the tragedy (which a virus is not) and excepts it as an occasional consequence of the world they choose to fly their plane within....Perhaps a similar reality check is in line for those who wish to exist within the realm of the Internet.
