Mary Lou Jepsen’s $75 laptop

p2pnet news | Product News:- “My transition has been long standing and well planned, and I am continuing with OLPC – my new company will be working on its next-generation hardware. I am also using OLPC’s IP to start a company by mutual agreement.”

That was Mary Lou Jepsen in a Reader’s Write to the item p2pnet posted when she left Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop Per Child project.

Now she’s building a $75 laptop.

“What computing can be, the XO laptop was just the first step,” says her new site, Pixel Qi.

She goes on >>>

Pixel Qi is currently pursuing the $75 laptop, while also aiming to bring sunlight readable, low-cost and low-power screens into mainstream laptops, cellphones and digital cameras.

Spinning out from OLPC enables the development of a new machine, beyond the XO, while leveraging a larger market for new technologies, beyond just OLPC: prices for next-generation hardware can be brought down by allowing multiple uses of the key technology advances.

Pixel Qi will give OLPC products at cost, while also selling the sub-systems and devices at a profit for commercial use.

Definitely stay tuned.

Jepsen invented the OLPC XO’s sunlight-readable display technology and co-invented its ultra-low power management system.

An MIT graduate, she has PhD in optics, a BS in electrical engineering, among other quals.

She co-created the first holographic video system in the world at the MIT Media Lab in 1989, where the interference structure of the hologram was computed at video rates, and shown on her hand-made display.

Definitely stay tuned.

A “spin-out”? Surely she means a “spin-off,” unless she wants people to think she’s lost control and is headed for a crash. Then again, her hair looks like she crashed late last night or early this morning.
