Sun buys MySQL AB for $1 billion

p2pnet news | Open Source:- Sun Microsystems says it’s buying Swedish open source database company MySQL AB for $1 billion —- $800 million in cash and assuming $200 million in options.
“From Facebook, Google and Sina.com to banks and telecommunications companies, architects looking for performance, productivity and innovation have turned to MySQL,” says Sun boss Jonathan Schwartz on his blog, going on:
“The adoption of MySQL across the globe is nothing short of breathtaking. They are the root stock from which an enormous portion of the web economy springs.
“But … CTO’s at startups and web companies disallow the usage of products that aren’t free and open source. They need and want access to source code to enable optimization and rapid problem resolution (although they’re happy to pay for support if they see value). Alternatively, more traditional CIO’s disallow the usage of products that aren’t backed by commercial support relationships - they’re more comfortable relying on vendors like Sun to manage global, mission critical infrastructure.”
The deal will, “help spread MySQL’s software to large corporations, which have been the biggest customers of Sun’s servers and software, and boost its distribution through Sun’s relationships with other server makers such as IBM Corp. and Dell Inc,” says Associated Press, adding:
“In recent quarters, as Sun has returned to profitability under new management and tightened cost controls, investors have pressured the company to spend some of its war chest in ways that boost its value.
“Still, some shareholders remain skeptical about the company’s prospects.”
