Charter trashes 14,000 US email accounts
p2pnet news | Product News:- Charter Communications admits because of a technical error, it trashed the contents of 14,000 US email accounts.
And they’re gone for ever.
"A spokeswoman for the St. Louis-based company says there’s no way to retrieve the messages, photos and other attachments erased from inboxes and archive folders across the country," says the Canadian Press, quoting Anita Lamont as saying Charter is sorry, "and apologizes to all those affected by the error," which occurred yesterday.
The company is automatically applying a $50 credit on the next bills of customers affected by the screw-up, says the St Louis Business Journal.
But every cloud has a silver lining and not to mix metaphors, Charter is also trying to turn a pig’s ear into a silk purse.
"Charter is also offering free installation of its home networking for one month," says the story.
Meanwhile, the company will continue to perform routine maintenance on unused email accounts, "but rather than immediately deleting them," it’ll back them up on another server for an "undetermined period of time" before permanently deleting them, adds the St Louis Business Journal.
