‘Clannad’ P2P virus author arrested

p2pnet news | P2P:- Japanese Masato Nakatsuji, 24, was yesterday arrested on suspicion of using the Winny P2P application to propagate a computer virus online via copyrighted animation footage, says the Daily Yomiuri.

"Screen images from computers infected by the most recent virus, indicating the destruction of files on their hard drives, appeared on Nakatsuji’s Internet homepage, which thereby became a master display of the virus’ progress," says the story.

"The prototype virus, known as the Harada virus, also destroys data stored on infected computers and began spreading a few years ago.

"Its name is derived from its use of video footage of a man whom it labels ‘Harada’."

It’s the first arrest of its kind, says the Asahi Shimbum, going on:

"Police said Nakatsuji created the virus in October and November last year using an image taken from the TV anime program ‘Clannad‘."

Nakatsuji also admitted creating the Harada Virus, the basis of the Clannad Virus, police said, according to the story, which adds:

"Police also arrested Shoji Sakai, a 39-year-old company employee of Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, and Katsuhisa Ikema, a 35-year-old unemployed man of Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, for allegedly distributing the image to an unspecified number of people via Winny.

"They were also arrested for alleged violations of the Copyright Law."
