Sweden, Hollywood, the Big 4 v The Pirate Bay

p2pnet news | MPAA News:- It’s the government of Sweden, Time Warner, Viacom, Fox, Sony, NBC Universal and Disney —- aka Hollywood —- and Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG, the members of the Big 4 organised music gang, versus a handful of young guys running a search site.

Because the entertainment cartels have finally coerced Sweden into officially charging the people running The Pirate Bay.

“The Motion Picture Association of America and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) are among those who have called for action to shut down the site,” says Reuters.

TPB is in effect, a search engine with very little difference to Google or Yahoo, say.

Users enter queries and TPB brings up results.

But, “It’s not merely a search engine,” the story has public prosecutor Hakan Roswall stating.

“It’s an active part of an action that aims at, and also leads to, making copyright protected material available.”

Roswall admits it could take, “more than convictions in Sweden to stop Pirate Bay, says the story, “Because the infrastructure is scattered among several places around the world… no separate country will be able to stop the site,” he said.

“But he believes advertisers could have second thoughts about using Pirate Bay if a guilty verdict is handed down, it adds.

The charges will be lodged on January 31.

  1. Musico Says:

Oh, finally it’s days are numbered! :)

  2. Pete Says:

Don’t be silly Musico, it will take a lot to bring down TPB!

  3. Reader's Write Says:

To bring down TBP you have to bring down Internet.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

They try and try and try to bring down the russian site in vain!

Good luck with the Pirate bay! even without couting the viking reactions to the attenpt that could be devastating on whoever participated in this attempt! Entertaiment and corporates Parasites: be ready to be raided by the Vickings!

  5. Krogoth Says:

    Russian…? Vickings…? wtf? o.O

Anyhoo, watch Steal This Film, they learned a lot from the first raid, they can be back up within hours now. Even in the unlikely event TPB does go down it’ll just fragment more, making it even more difficult to stop.

    TPB FTW! \o/

  6. Andrey Says:

Roswall is sooo going to be DDoSed!

  7. B_Easy24 Says:

I hope that the French goverment don’t give in to the the big 4 cartel. Music began as a grassroots market but then it was captured by corporations when they saw that they can make a profit by exploiting the artists. What exactly is copyright material? just because I publish your music does mean I own it? the big four think they do, thats why they’re in the business of of levying pseudo charges against music lovers world with the help of their lap dog dogos the RIAA.

  8. Dahnch Says:

It’s anti-American. The fascist regime in Hollywood thinks they are above the law. If they succeed, they will create a market that they have even less control of. They have fought technology too long. they must accept change or be devoured by it. Thomas Jefferson would approve of The Pirate Bay. The MPAA and RIAA don’t approve of Thomas Jefferson. “The tree of liberty must be fed from time to time from the blood of tyrants and patriots alike.”

  9. Long John Silver Says:

    ARRRRRRRR!

  10. pIrAtE fOrEvEr Says:

HA HA HA HA HA HA LONG LIVE PIRATEBAY!!!!

  11. r34L1TY Ch3Ck Says:

Oh those silly american corporations! ‘We’re going to lose money!!!!!! OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!’ Well you fascist, capitalist pigs, LISTEN UP! There’s a world of change that is never going to stop or slow down! Either evolve or die off. That is the way of things. Get your heads out of your asses. LONG LIVE TPB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS- 9/11 was an inside job! Tell your friends

  12. Eddie Lee Says:

TPB will live forever! There are so many server scattered over the world you will never get them all and they will keep rolling more and more out. There are over 2.5 dedicated members even if some staff get locked away im sure there are millions of people who would happily continue running the site.

  13. Dan Says:

    LONG LIVE TPB!!!!
You will never bring TPB and even if you miracleously do… they can back up in hours so you’ll never get rid of TPB unless you get rid of internet! sorry guys! just go find something or someone else to rip off! oh wait a minute… no im not sorry:D

  14. Nisse Hult Says:

Just so you guys know they are only charged with “aiding” a copyright crime so there is no real danger of prison, just a $200′000 fine if they would loose.. somehow I think that the piratebay could gather that money (they have 2.5 million active users) in less then a day..

  15. JoeSchmoe Says:

TPB isn’t going anywhere. They may have a few glitches in the server, they may have a couple days that they’re forced to shut down, but they’ve learned over the years…there’s nothing that will stop them, especially not the money-grubbing pigs of hollywood and the music industry.

  16. Just Me Says:

TPB will not be an easy adversary..There are certainly more individuals that back TPB. than back the entertainment industry on this.

The easiest route would be..leave The Pirate Bay alone..or this greedy industry that think they deserve so much..will soon learn that they have just bitten off more than they can chew.

  17. Reader's Write Says:

    Long live TPB!

  18. Rei Says:

They might as well lock up those 2.5 Million++ active subscribers of TPB. HAHA!

Let’s just hope they have enough funds to feed them in jail or else I will sue you! haha – yes Im a member!

  19. AntiByråkrat Says:

Musico: The very same day that you’ll munch my ass ,)

  21. Reader's Write Says:

    Musico, you are wrong. Period.

  22. AzzKikr73 Says:

As a clever guy said: “To bring down TBP you have to bring down Internet.” True? YES! Ofcause it is so….. and sites like TPB. There will ALWAYS be a site somewhere on the net, there you can get threads to download pieces of information… Games, Movies, Programs, Music…and so on.

Is it legal? Shall we let them be? Shall we use LOADS of money to shut them down, or shall we use that money to lower the price for music download? Questions I don’t care about…really. But one thing I know: I just went through my CD/DvD collection, and I found out that about 75% of my downloaded games, I also have on ORIGINALS….. What does that tell you?

    Long Live LifeOfSeeders!
    :o )

  23. Svenne Says:

The piratebay will never closedown and it is a fact. So what if they closes for a few weeks, it will be up and runing again. Sooner then u think. TPB dont do anything wrong here, nada. They just awnser questions. They are not the uploaders of the apps, movies, games etc.

Gl trying, but you will waste mony and time.

    Peace out.

  24. Skywize Says:

You know whats funny? They make reference to TBP being similar to google, and in fact, alot of the time, google is better for finding torrents. My first step to find something is to go to google and search for ” torrent” and see whats there. Google is just as guilty of helping file sharing as TBP or mininova. Why dont you go after google? Oh thats right, google can actually afford to hire attorneys better than yours.

  25. Nicholas Erickson Says:

Why should a copyright last eighty years? I mean haven’t movies from 5 or 10 year ago made back 10 times what they put in?

    Pirate For Life
    itproks@yahoo.com

  26. madhu Says:

if they shutdown TPB they have to shut down the internet…coz 30% to 40 % of internet traffic is of
p2p(torrent)…..and if no more traffic then no more revenue for ISPs!

    cheers to TPB!

  27. pablo Says:

I hope ThePirateBay won’t be condemned, so I can still think there is freedom somewhere in the world.

  28. Xer0 Says:

Maby then they should focus on getting google to remove anny sites containing the word “torrent”.
That would bee even more effective than shuting down ptb…
However, i don’t think google would agree to do that because of all the traffic they would loose when all warez searchers finds themselves annother search engine. =)

And also, like most anti-piracy organisations thend to believe, piracy is not dependent on a specific technology. Thats why all efforts to try to end it by attacking particular application or file format will fail. Even if they should succsed to remove piracy form the internet, which they never will, sneakernet would still prevail.

  29. Göran Axelsson Says:

    @Nicholas

Copyright doesn’t last 80 years, it lasts 70 years after the rights holder dies…. incremented every twentieth year with twenty years before the copyright on Mickey Mouse expires.

Copyright is lasting statistically over 100 years. Guess why I joined the Swedish Pirate Party. Time to get our rights back.

Btw, I pay a fee on every DVD I purchases that goes to the music industry (kasettskatt), I have payed my license to pirate.

Göran Axelsson, member of the Swedish Pirate Party

  30. Jakob Says:

    What is a law?

My oppinion is that a law is a moral reflection of a society and as both the moral changes so does the society over time which also affects the laws.
I think that its quite pointless to pass laws that a majority of people don’t follow. Because the lawenforcement wouldn’t have the resources to deal with it.
So i say that theese atempts by the kapitalist company will only lead to world wide riots because we will not just sitt quitely on our asses and do nothing!

    /wave

  31. Romeo Says:

First and foremost the governments are going about taking these sites down all wrong to begin with… Just think about what happens when the US locks up a drug king… His right hand man (who is almost always crazier than the original boss) takes the underground to a whole new world… When Demonoid was shut down not too long ago what happened… In those very same articles these writers published even more websites with torrents for download…

Just face it… the download underground isn’t going anywhere for awhile

  32. Reader's Write Says:

So what is the difference between Pirate bringing up a search result for a torrent or Google bringing up a search for a torrent. BOTH DO, and infact you can get more torrents on GOOGLE!!

  33. PKR Says:

C’mooon. Nobody can ban the internet. just throw US in a box and drop it in a box…then will share the box on TPB cuz’ TPB is US! subscribed!

  34. Ison Says:

TPB will never fall. We vikings will never give up! TPB and SWE 4ever!

  35. rvv Says:

I love to seem them try, good luck!

  36. Reader's Write Says:

I love the people saying companies need to change with time.

    What can they do?

offer new movies and tv shows for cheap downloads?
People still pirate them and have better quality faster.

    Add commercials?
People would edit them and pirate them

So many people act as if they are revolutionaries, but you know your doing it because its free and easy.

  37. Reader's Write Says:

They can never stop piracy, even 10 year old kids download stuff these days. Face it guys you’ll just have to find another way of making money!

  38. AndyMac Says:

the only thing that needs to be said is, why TPB? there are loads of these sites out there! why pick on the biggest and best of them all? is it in the hope that the smaller sites will think twice? lol aint gonna happen. TPB wont go down and in the very unlikely event that it does, there are plenty more sites out there. this is just an advertising scam for the big companies.

  39. ibook Says:

    Anywhere, anytime… Long Live TPB!!!!

  40. lol Says:

dude thats pure bullshit. tpb has so much shit against they should be happy if they don’t get sentenced to prison. and the swedish anti piracy bay have so many hackers that they could bring down tbp in minutes. my recommendation is to stop downloading cause they can see all the shit ur doin

  41. Wezlan Says:

Yeah, right. I hope that the swedish “anti pirat bay” try to hack TPB and bring it down “in minutes”. Does noone remember when volenteering hackers struck back in sweden? You hack TPB, cuz then you can kiss your preciuse sites goodbye! there will be a storm of hacking that will hit their servers. And I will enjoy it =)

Stod downloading couse they se all the shit we are doing? LOL! the guyes that have been charged so far practicly called the police themselves!
And the myth that the Big Bad Anti piracy agancy will come and get you ( good god :| ) is nothing but a myth. Come and get me…

I have a feeling that in the end this will have the same effect on the music-movie-industries that the Napster-trial had on Metallica, cuz people that are made into villians by someone thats trying to sell them something tend to revolte. And its allso just like the muhammed-pictuers in Jyllandsposten; if the muslims just had kept their mouths shut, then the whole thing whould have gone away. But cuz they burned buildings, killed people and made sure their anger made every firstpage in every newspaper the images will NEVER dissapear.

So the more the cooperations sue and make a fuzz about it, the move people will get curious about TPB, and the more people will start to use it. Its acctually free publicity =)

    Long Live TPB

  42. Spellchecker Says:

Good freaking god, people….take pride in your flames against these other posters and download a pirated version of a spellchecker….

Reading your posts makes me feel even dumber than I was to start with…

  43. Danny Says:

well we all hope TPB will manage to stay alive for ever.
but for now they are safe.
there are no swedish laws that can bring down a site like TPB.
And even if the american companies think they rule the world, they dont have that much influence in sweden as they rarely invest any money here.

so from us all here in sweden, we hope you drown in your own money!

  44. CaveHermit Says:

The history of digital piracy in a nutshell.
    First there Was Tapes.
Take TRS-80 Tape, Put into one side of Dual cassette deck. Put blank in other side. Push play and Record. = New copy of TRS-80 tape. Give to friend.
Now Add 20ish + years and 20ish + years of tech advancements.

They couldn’t stop the Kid withe Dual Cassette deck then.. They’re not going to stop the Kid with Internet connection now.

You know there are still kids in this world that have to pirate their private mix off the Radio.

  45. Nov Says:

There is only one way. The swashbuckling pirate way! So lets show them we wont give in, not before they make it fair game.

  46. TPB LOVER Says:

Pirate Bay Rules 4 Ever, get on with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. INTERNET Says:

Ofcourse they want to shut down some “pirated-material-distributor” site…
BUT HELL NO THAT THEY R GONNA GET TBP!

    @ CaveHermit
    haha, casette-tape :P nice one!

  48. Destructor Says:

Piratebay will never go down :D

  49. A child of GOD Says:

The problem with TPB and the authorities is a symptomatical one. The problem of power turning against the people. It’s been the same all throughout history and all kinds of forms and shapes: dictatorships, inquisition etc. They all acused the people they killed and jailed of turning against the law (read -the system and it’s interests) while the problem all along was that the law had turned against the people. THE LAW IS FOR THE PEOPLE NOT THE PEOPLE FOR THE LAW. When the law turns against God and the people every human has THE RIGHT AND THE OBLIGATION to disregard it, refuse to obey it and revolt against it.
God made man free and let no one take that away. Make no mistake about it! The war the authorities are carrying against TPB and other such movements around the world is carried out for one purpose and one purpose only: to eradicate, suffocate and smash any individual or group resistance against the world leaders. These world leaders will soon converge into one single one. The Bible calls him the Antichrist. He will be an economical, political, social and religious genius but his sole purpose will be to turn against God and the dearest of God’s creation: MAN. That is you , me, your wife, children, mother, father and everything that you in your turn hold dear. I encourage you to take on the Bible and read the passages dealing with this (The Book of Daniel, The Book of Ezekiel, The Book of Revelation and the Gospels). It will feel like reading the daily papers.
I am by no means saying that TPB would be some kind of christian organisation fighting the coming of the Antichrist. However in an indirect way they encourage the exercise of human freedom which is the greatest gift man got from God and for which millions of people throughout history were prepaired to die.
It is worrying and frightening to see how fast the kingdom of darkness advances in the world today. When speaking about this, our Lord Jesus Christ said: “When you see all these things coming, WATCH AND PRAY”. Keep your eyes on Him, the author and finisher of our faith and do not tire fighting for the freedom of man and the salvation of human souls. If through your work, you guys on TPB, can delay the coming of the evil rulership of the world, I really hope you can continue on and FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT.

  50. Reader's Write Says:

The industrialized, developed nations of the world became so by stealing technology and innovations from each other for hundreds of years. Now the developing nations of the world are prevented from doing the exact same thing by intellectual property laws. They are forced to live without medicine, technology, and other innovations that should theoretically be within their reach (relatively low cost of supplies and ease of developing given the knowledge to do so) but which are kept prohibitively expensive by international intellectual property laws. You can’t own something that can infinitely duplicate itself at little or no cost!

  51. Reader's Write Says:

A child of GOD, God also told not to steal, downloading these creations of other free men is not stealing?

  52. my name Says:

    well well well

its funny, wju dont all those companies stop spending money on lawers and suing pple, and start investing it into making cds cheaper? the day i spend 15euros on a cd is the day i pull out my own spine and eat out my ass.

or 50euros for a game that is 5hours max? i dont think so.

but so what. i dont care, its no lose to me if they force me to download by being a bunch of dickheads, im not paying money so fuck them

  53. Reader's Write Says:

Our government (Sweden) will never let a judge convict the pirate bay. If they did, other laws will have been broken in the process. Laws that we take immensely seriously. Freedom of speech, for instance. Unlike the US, *hrmpf*…

Regardless of what happens though, TPB will never go away, so this is completely futile. Hell, even the MPAA President said so. Funny how they still exist huh?

  54. Reader's Write Says:

Long live the Piratebay we shall work 2gether 2 do wat we can possibly do!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Reader's Write Says:

Fckin greedy MPAA Pre fckin sident who the fck does he think he is??? some rich hollywood fckin star? i sure am gonna get my shotgun out in court!!!! If you win in court, I will donate to help cover your legal expenses. If the copyright nazis win, I will donate to help you pay the fines. If you have to leave Sweden, I will donate to make it easier for you to keep TPB running. Sharing really is caring. I do care for TPB and will share my hard earned cash if needed. TPB must live. International copyright nazism and luddism must not prevail.

TPB did so much for any of us. There has been much love in the small bay under Mount Sharemore. I call any of you reading this to start saving a part of your money in case we need to defend the ship against the grim cannibalistic tribes from the woods with a © tatooed on their shoulders and nazism in their hearts.
    !!!!!!!!!!

  56. Reader's Write Says:

If you buy athing its urs you own, y not share it ??????fckin idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!
