Greetings everyone, I just posted my reply to Paul's speech here: http://www.mediafuturist.com/2008/02/welcome-to-paul.html
I guess I just couldn't resist - there is just too much bizarre stuff in this speech. Cheers, Gerd Leonhard (Music & Media Futurist, Author of Music2.0)

"Let me ask you this, Paul: do you really advocate web sites, communities and networks scanned and censored, emails read and screened, Instant Messenger conversations monitored, Skype calls supervised, USB sticks DRM’ed, hard-drives sealed, flash memory cards locked, rootkits and software locks on our computers, a read-only web, the end of remixes, and the implementation of an online police state that without a doubt will only bring us new censorship and the demise of fair use and free speech while the un-paid and unlicensed trading of music will soar to new heights in 100s of new ways that we don’t even know about today..."

" “Because the truth is that whatever business model you are building, you cannot compete with billions of illegal files free on P2P networks.”

Actually, the TRUTH is that AllofMP3 made 30 million dollars in 2006 , competing with free.
People were quite willing to pay a fair reasonable price for a DRM free product, that
was LEGAL in russia.

No DRM, good price model easily competed with free.
Wasn't good enough for the stone age label though.

By the third sentence...

"What I’m trying do here today is identify a course of action that will benefit all: artists, labels, writers and publishers."

... it is already clear that this guy's just another greedy, corporate shmuck.
Where is the customer in his definition of "all"?

"If you were publishing a magazine that was advertising stolen cars, processing payments for them and arranging delivery of them you’d expect to get a visit from the police wouldn’t you? What’s the difference?"

Difference is someone, somewhere in the world, is missing their car. They have to go buy a new one. When someone pirates, the producer of the work can still sell it... it's not me downloading your file and then deleting your file from your computer, I'm merely making a copy.

"Because the truth is that whatever business model you are building, you cannot compete with billions of illegal files free on P2P networks."

Yeah, no kidding... it's called CAPITALISM in most of the world... learn to survive or die. Survival of the fittest.

Many of these greedy people are yelling for the ISP to police the internet because they are losing so called sales.... If the ISP begins knocking people offline at 40.00 a pop how long before they are out of business? Also if these companies are trying to get people to buy music online and advertising online - how long before all thier customers are bumped offline without access to internet.... They are screaming for something that they havent quite thought out. Do they believe that offline piracy doesnt happen? Do they believe that CDs and DVDs are not copied and traded and sold and bought offline? What do they believe people were doing before the internet? Where do you think these large collections of music came from, all purchased?

I read what these guys as the riaa, mpaa and other aa's are saying and I simply shake my head in disbelief, because the so called corporate guys do not have a clue what the consumer wants... it isnt all about music and movies, it isnt about screwing them or the artist or the songwriter, it is about freedom and information. You can get content on the internet that for years the corporations have kept locked up. Songs that you cant find anywhere because they are locked in vaults due to license agreements between greedy cartel members. Movies that wasnt released in an area because it wouldnt make enough money to buy a new home for some guy, not because it wasnt any good, it just wasnt a blockbuster.

Me, I am so sick of it all, the cartels banging down doors, the government watching everything everyone does, the spying, the lying, the corrupt politicians, the greedy lawmakers,
