The rule of thumb I use is a fairly simple one, do they make their point without launching into unecessarily personal attacks on folks, in short is respect to other posters opinions shown in exchange for the right to make posts ?

If its clear there is no respect for the opinions of others then for the good of the community and you sanity, it is best to deny the trolls the attention they crave, whilst we all do our best to ensure valid and vibrant discussion topics are what we deliver up to visitors, the reality of life sadly is that sometimes our hands are forced and as Jon has done we make our regret public but act firmly.

And as for trolls who cry free speech, this is not a publicly funded site, but a privately owned site. The owner is not required to accept any comment blind sighted.

If your only place in life, is trying to make other angry, then find another site to post at, or better yet, make your own rant site or blog.

Ddbann demonstrates that someone can disagree and yet
debate intelligently, without attacking others. Kudos and respect.

And on the Crookes case&, they haven’t set it for trial. But I’ll shortly bringing a motion for dismissal on the vital question of whether or not merely hyperlinking to something equals liability.

This situation is actually closer to a ‘House Party’ than a public gathering.
Analogous to a group of people invited to a private residence.
If a guest at this private party gets out of line, does nothing but start
problems, makes things uncomfortable for other guests, the property owner
has the right to ask him to leave or have him removed from his private
property. Free speech isn’t the issue in this situation at all.

This is a virtual ‘private party’. We are here as guests in jon’s private space.
He has the full right to kick out anyone who comes here just to cause trouble,
and it has nothing to do with ‘free speech’.

Or Censorship.

Censorship is a government making sure that sites like this
are not allowed to exist, let alone flourish.
