PacNet ordered to reveal user names
p2pnet news | P2P:- Anime distributor Odex was, last year, demanding the names of up to 1,000 PacNet users whom it claimed had downloaded pirated versions of the Japanese cartoons.
PacNet didn’t have to comply, ruled district judge Ernest Lau, said the Straits Times.
Odex furthermore lost its appeal to the Singapore High Court to force iPacNet to disclose the names of its subscribers under suspicion.
But the decison hasn’t done much good for the alleged downloaders.
The appeal was dismissed because Odex is a sub-licensee, but not the copyright owner or the exclusive license.
So instead, the courts ordered the ISP to, "hand over the information to the six Japanese companies, Sunrise Inc., Kadokawa Pictures Inc., GDH K.K., TV Tokyo Medianet Inc., Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and Showgate Inc., which actually own the copyrights," says Channel News Asia.
"The ruling has paved way for further enforcement actions by other copyright owners," it says, adding:
"Odex said it will work closely with other copyright owners, which are expected to make similar applications to court soon."

Well, remember this: it’s not all about you.
Some of the anime storylines are quite compelling. And with the animation aspect they can do much more than a run-of-the-mill special effects department for a major motion film company, and do it much faster also. I personally greatly enjoy the story behind Full Metal Alchemist and I’m a middle-aged dad…
Finally, you should also take note that the reason these avid fans download those episodes is because most of them will NEVER make it to the US or even outside of Japan. If they are not picked up by a major distributor and resold outside the country no one else will be able to enjoy them. It is fact that those downloaders would happily purchase them if they were available for purchase. So this is another case of the major labels, be it movie or music, that cannot give the consumer what they want and instead decide to sue them! See?? It happens in other countries besides the US…

companies do in fact release certain series in subbed and dubbed dvd editions. dubs suck horribly, and they are pretty much a mockery of a great work of art. consider watching say “the departed” in hindi, that’d be a completely disgusting thing to do. subs can be ok, but more often than not, they are mistranslated, censored, and toned down significantly to make anime available to all the 8 year old anime fans (sarcasm, most anime fans are in their teens, and are young adults). most us anime companies also censor out a whole lot of blood, swearing, sexual humour, and other material in anime that made it so much more appealing than general us media crap in the first place.

First this case is set in Singapore where anime is big business so think of it as people downloading lost 24 episodes etc.. over there they have many more anime on dvd so its not like in the usa where we get shity sub/dubs. but dose rase some intresting points e.g couls sky in uk get names for fox in the usa /fox get names for bbc etc..

Dubs suck ass, which is why I d/l fansubs.
Free fansubs are better than dubs so they’re suing due to the principle that cracked is higher quality than original.

Whats even worse, most of ODEX’s releases are subtitled, on DVDR’s and it has been confirmed that they use subtitle scripts ripped right out of fansubbed versions. I have seen some of thier releases, your basic fansub has better quality to say the least of a HD version.
