Comment spam — say no more

p2pnet news | Advertising:- Comments from Trolls aren’t the only problems online publishers have to deal with.

Spam comments are also a serious pain in the gluteus maximus.

As I post this, the ever-faithful Daniel k.daniel@msn.com, a prominent p2pnet spammer when p2pnet became a dedicated blog under WordPress, is still around with the same old same old, ie:

download-movie-and-music-video-download.info

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article Movie sanitizers sanitized, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

Then we have:

My good buddy who works as a Equine Vet showed me your info about NATO vs the Taliban: on YouTube . We searched over other stories that told us many more things , Thank You

RIAA with Don Reisinger: read, weep is a quite interesting post but quite difficult to understand for me.

To all the uninitiated out there – read this and take heed. This is good stuff. Thanks.

There also seems to be some kind of outfit at wwedivasws@gmail.com that’s convinced aspiring actresses (Hi Kristin, Hi Gemma) that posting comment spam on sites —- any sites —- is a great way to further their careers. Wonder how much they charge the girls?

It tracks back to freeadvertisingtool.com which owns a whole slew of ‘wwedivas’ such as wwedivasinfo, wwedivasinthongs, wwedivasla, wwedivaslotmachines, wwedivasmedeaphotos, all nicely buried in the page source code.

One of the things it’s promoting is “UNautoBlogger ===>>> The Ultimate In Non-Automated Blog/Forum posting!”

Then there’s Comment Poster with this kind of stuff:

So how Comment Poster will help you? It works in different way than Trackback Submitter does, and generates you even more high quality backlinks. Comment Poster is designed to submit your links not to blogs (this is what Trackback Submitter is for), but to high quality websites and has amazing success ratio of 80%. This is not a typo – it means you will get about 80 backlinks easily after submitting comments to 100 websites. Just install Comment Poster with Trackback Submitter together and you will get the highest success ratio in online business industry!

“Wow, it looks so great, but there is a problem – I don’t have a list of websites where I could post my comments automatically” – think some webmasters. This is not a problem. When I say Comment Poster is 100% automated, I really mean it! All you need to do – load some keywords related to your page and this tool will find thousands of websites to submit your comments automatically. Why should you waste your time searching for related websites? This is what Comment Poster will do!

By 12:08 pm, Akismet had nailed a total of 235,846 comment spams since I installed it a few months back. By 12:08:10 >

How often do you have to come through here and delete trash?

  2. Jon Says:

    Every hour or so …

    Cheers!

    You have my sympathy…

A lot of these seem to be generated with one of those turing conversation engines or something similar to try and make the comment vaguely relevant to the article. Of course those things where never very clever – you’d tell them “Necessity is the mother of invention” and they’d ask you to tell them more about your mother. If you increased the grammatical and syntactic complexity of the article titles, you’d probably make the spam more fragmented and garbled, and easier to spot. There are certain things that humans can do effortlessly that machines have immense difficulty with.

“There are certain things that humans can do effortlessly that machines have immense difficulty with.”

Yup. Things like reading comprehension (maybe), image recognition, speech recognition (not the phone menu types…falls under reading…), etc. Although machines are massively more superior to humans in regard to things such as math, repetitive data processing, error free data collection and presentation. What it saw is what you get.

Jon, how about using reCaptcha? It’s actually much harder to crack than Yahoo captchas and it helps digital archival of OCR-proof text.

I have switched tactics in shutting down the spam advertised websites of many a people. I keep a copy of the spam and send it to the registrar of the spam advertised site. I also check to see if the name servers are hosted on a viruse-infected computer. One way to do this is to resolve the ip address of the name server and then check the host name of the nameserver. If the reverse hostname is something like cpe001.pool.dynamic.isp.net, then it is very likely a hijacked computer that is illegally being used as a nameserver.

On my trophy list of domains I got suspended include,

    thepremiermeds.com
    lauhbeinorkanimal.com
    hotcanadatrustedpills.com
    hotcanadastoredrugs.com
    reayfireanswerlot.com
    simplewarmsarcame.com
    thousanabluwuo.com

as well as many others. I work to shut down at least 3 or four domains a day that are sent in spam to my inbox. Spammers have finally gotten the message that plaza1.net is off limits, and I am in the process of teaching them not to mess with freelink.cx. If they decide to Joe Job me or do a distributed denial of service attack against me, it will backfire on them big time. After spammers have cause me so much work, I actually ENJOY shutting them down and costing them money. I spend about 10 minutes each day doing so, and it is quite satisfying.
