Microsoft $44.6-billion bid for Yahoo

p2pnet news | Product News:- Microsoft and Yahoo IM networks became one in 2006 and now the much-bandied-about rumour that Bill and the Boyz were after Yahoo appears to have become hard reality.

Or with Bill Gates’ retirement imminent, that should now perhaps be Steve and the Boyz.

Either way, a monopoly of monopolies is on the horizon with Yahoo shares up 60% in pre-market trading to US$30.50, “after Microsoft Corp. made an unsolicited US$44.6-billion offer for the seminal Web portal,” says The National Post, going on:

“Yahoo has yet to respond to the offer, while Microsoft said the tie-up would create a ‘competitive alternative’.”

The tie-up, if it goes through, would of course do the exact opposite.

“Google Inc., which would be the main rival to the Microsoft-Yahoo tag team, saw its stock fall 6% in pre-market trading following lower-than-expected quarterly earnings yesterday,” says the story.

A, “commercial partnership may have made sense at one time,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (right) in a letter to Yahoo’s board, says Dow Jones Newswires, but Microsoft now believes the “only alternative” is the, “combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! that we are proposing”.

The buy is, “subject to the negotiation of a definitive agreement between the two companies,” says the story, adding:

“A Yahoo spokesman in London couldn’t comment. Yahoo spokesmen in the U.S. couldn’t immediately be reached by calls placed well before business hours.”

What would Microsoft do with all the priceless private and personal user information presently ensconced in the Yahoo databases?

Definitely stay tuned.

this could be good and it could be bad.
but whatever someone needs to be googles rival, perhaps the two being one will force some search engine growth or at least bring some more free web services

  2. x3style Says:

Oh dear i wouldn’t trust Google anywhere near the hands of Gates anything he touches goes to dust.I’d rather have the Google guys take over Microsoft at least these guys know more of what they are doing then the others.

  3. Havvy Says:

…google has a bunch of small rivals, and a few big rivals. Find a different search engine if you really don’t want to use google.

I really don’t want to see Microsoft take over Yahoo!
