Oscar screener piracy: the raw facts

p2pnet news | Movies:- “Every year,” posts Waxy.org, “the Academy tries to stop Oscar films from leaking online. And every year, they leak all the same.”
They do, they do.
And as the movies start showing up online, Hollywood blames file sharers —- kids toting miniaturised camcorders provided by the likes of Sony, one of the biggest complainers.
The reality, however, is: Hollywood insiders themselves supplied much of the content which shows up online, and which is attributed to file sharing.
Now Waxy has decided to, “up the ante, releasing all the underlying data and extending it to 2003″.
Not only but also, it’s open source —- pure, raw data, untouched by creative MPAA accountants.
It’s, “Six years of Oscar piracy data on all 186 nominated films from 2003 to 2008 – including US release dates for Academy screeners, cams, telesyncs, R5/telecines, screener leaks and retail DVD rips,” says the post.
Priceless. And this year, “all but six of the 34 nominated films were available in DVD quality by the last week of January,” says Waxy, adding:
“This is about consistent with past years, but we’re seeing a shift towards studios releasing DVDs closer to their theatrical date. This trend, combined with the new availability of high-quality Region 5 rips from overseas, is making the screener leak less meaningful.”
After all, he asks, “why bother releasing the screener if the retail DVD or a direct-from-film transfer is already out?”
Why indeed …..
Meanwhile, will there even be any Oscars?
Stay tuned.

I guess There Will Be Blood was one of the six screeners that didnt get leaked. I hope Juno wins for best picture. Thats the only one that I bothered to see in the theatres. But Im sure it wont. cause it wasnt as deep as the other films.
