Linux creator cores Apple Leopard

p2pnet news | Open Source:- Linux creator Linus Torvalds thinks Apple’s Leopard is “utter crap”. And Microsoft Vista isn’t a whole lot better.

But, “I don’t think they’re equally flawed,” The Age has him saying.

“I think Leopard is a much better system. (But) OS X in some ways is actually worse than Windows to program for. Their file system is complete and utter crap, which is scary.”

Speaking at the linux.conf.au conference in Melbourne, Australia, Torvalds also, “poured scorn on the modern trend to treat a new version or update of an operating system as a cause for major celebration and marketing,” says the story, going on:

“An operating system should be completely invisible,” he said. “To Microsoft and Apple (it is) a way to control the whole environment … to force people to upgrade their applications and hardware.”

As for Linux, the most exciting developments have come because it’s boasting genuine green credentials, “after years of hard work,” and is also in mobile devices such as the One Laptop per Child project and Asus’s new ultra-cheap Eee PC.

“The latter, he said, could be a sign that Asian hardware manufacturers were starting to bypass Western commercial operating systems in order to get more control over their products,” according to The Age.

“That’s the primary area that open source (software like Linux) is useful,” it quotes him as saying. “Software is really expensive to produce and takes years. If you’re a hardware company you can’t really afford that, you either have to be controlled from the outside or take a pre-existing software stack that you can make changes to.”

  1. EE Says:

I am outraged by his comments…

Vista is obviously just as big a piece of “utter crap” as leopard is.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

    vista is junk

  3. Richuk Says:

    What an arrogant idiot.

He’s probably correct about Vista though.

  4. Phil Urich Says:

    I tend to find that:
    (a) Linus always sounds kinda arrogant, and
    (b) the more I think about his comments the more I can’t manage to disagree.

This is another of those cases.

Also, he didn’t say that Vista wasn’t a bigger piece of crap than Leopard, in fact that Leopard was relatively better was exactly what he said but with the exception that Leopard is in his opinion worse to have to program for, which in fact is likely true.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

I have to agree with Phil U. Whether by intention or not, LT does sound smug at times. Mr linux does have a point though. One just has to stop and seriously consider the options! Ballamer, on the other hand, is just plain irrating and I rarely give consideration to what he says. Jobs, I can put up with.

  6. Niko Bolante Says:

Vista, as of now, isn’t worth using…

  7. smoker Says:

    he is right :D
