Yahoo: Rupert Murdoch to the rescue?

p2pnet news | Products:- There is someone who might be able to to rescue, if that’s the right word, Yahoo from Microsoft.

Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Or is it just an part if the corporate mating dance to get Bill and the Boyz to boost their offer?

"Preliminary" talks with News Corp, parent company of The Times, and Yahoo, have been taking place over the past few days, says Times Online.

Any deal would include News Corp merging MySpace and "other online assets" into Yahoo, and then taking a 20 per cent stake in the group, says the story.

But a full takeover isn’t likely because News Corp is still in the process of, "digesting, and paying for, recent purchases like Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal," believes The Register, going om:

"It is not clear how real the deal is and how much it is being used to encourage Microsoft into improving its offer.

"In financial terms, Murdoch might be able to play now but could struggle to compete against a likely better offer from Microsoft in the next few weeks."

For now, "It is thought that any deal between News Corp and Yahoo! would include a cash contribution from the media company," says Times Online.

"A deal would represent the culmination of various tie-ups which have been discussed by the two groups over the past 18 months."

Yahoo has just committed $160 million to buy Maven Networks, a company specialising in managing advertisements in online videos, and while the corporate forces figure out who gets what, an exodus from Yahoo may have started with the abrupt departure of Bradley Horowitz, head of Yahoo’s Advanced Technology Division , to Google.
