Fidel Castro quits as president

p2pnet news | Politics:- After almost half-a-century in power, at the age of 81, Fidel Castro has resigned as Cuba’s president.
The country’s official newspaper, the online version of Granma, carries the news, along with a five-part series called Reflections of President Fidel Castro.
He seized power in a 1959 revolution against dictator Fulgencio Batista and has survived attempt after attempt to dislodge him as president.
"I neither will aspire to nor will I accept - I repeat - I neither will aspire to nor will I accept, the position of president of the council of state and commander in chief," he says.
Castro’s resignation, " opens the path for Raul Castro’s succession to the presidency, and the full autonomy he has lacked in leading a caretaker government," says the Press Association, adding:
"The younger Castro has raised expectations among Cubans for modest economic and other reforms, stating last year that the country requires unspecified "structural changes" and acknowledging government wages averaging about 19 US dollars (£9) a month do not satisfy basic needs."
