Michael Geist named in EFF Pioneer Awards

p2pnet news | Freedom:- Canada’s Michael Geist, law professor, political commentator and blogger / columnist supreme, has been named a winner in the EFF’s (Electronic Frontier Foundation) 2008 Pioneer Awards:
Also dubbed are the Mozilla Foundation and its chairwoman, Mitchell Baker, and AT&T whistleblower Mark Klein.
The award ceremony will be held at 7pm, March 4 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina together with the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference (ETech).
Michael Robertson of Linspire (and other) fame will give the keynote address: “What to Expect When You’re Expecting…To Be Sued.”
Last year, Geist was a prime mover in protests against industry minister Jim Prentice’s efforts to introduce a Canadian DMCA.
He’s also on the privacy commissioner of Canada’s expert advisory board and the Canadian Digital Information Strategy’s review panel. Geist is also an internationally syndicated columnist on technology law and writes a popular blog on the Internet and intellectual property issues.
Klein is a retired AT&T telecommunications technician who blew the whistle on the government’s warrantless surveillance program. When news reports of the illegal spying surfaced in December of 2005, Klein realized that he had been witness to, and had participated in, setting up a massive surveillance technology that violated the rights of millions of Americans.
Well deserved, Michael.
