p2pnet news | Advertising:- You’re perfectly justified to worry about the sanctity of your personal online data online, no matter how many promises of confidentiality are made by the companies which hold the priceless (to advertisers) information about you.
And it now turns out this may be particularly so in Britain where, says The Register, more than ten million customers of the country’s three largest ISPs are about to have their browsing habits sold to Phorm, a “company with roots in the murky world of spyware”.
Phorm says it’s organised exclusive agreements with BT PLC, TalkTalk and Virgin Media to, “enable the companies to offer a new online advertising platform, the Open Internet Exchange (OIX), and a free consumer internet feature, Webwise, which ensures fewer irrelevant adverts and additional protection against malicious websites”.
Relevance is, of course, in the eyes of the beholder and you may not agree with Phorm and its partners on what’s of consequence, and what isn’t.
“OIX will create a new marketplace for online advertising, that is based on internet users’ anonymous browsing activity and ensure consumers receive fewer irrelevant ads,” the company promises, going on:
“It will also revolutionise current standards of online privacy and fully protect the identity of consumers. Phorm’s privacy claims have been validated under best industry practices, both through an independent audit conducted by Ernst & Young (View report PDF) and a Privacy Impact Assessment undertaken by experts from Privacy International.”
However, “The deal has sparked fears over privacy,” says El Reg, although Phorm, “strongly rejected such concerns”.
Phorm, once 121media, is run by Kent Ertegrul of MiGs Over Moscow fame. His, “most notable foray online was as the founder of PeopleOnPage, an ad network that operated earlier in the decade and which was blacklisted as spyware by the likes of Symantec and F-Secure,” says the story, going on:
“The difference between 121Media/Phorm and PeopleOnPage is that the newer company buys its targets direct from ISPs, rather than persuading people to download spyware. It aims to make its money strictly from legit advertisers and publishers, avoiding the sort of operators that gave pop-up advertising such a bad name in the early noughties.
“In a telephone interview today, Phorm said its technology is actually a privacy improvement on current advertising targeting datatbases run by Google and others, because data is only stored while it is needed to serve an ad and then discarded.”
The technology, “doesn’t store any personally identifiable information or IP addresses and we don’t retain information on user browsing behaviour,” Phorm swears. “So we never know - and can’t record - who’s browsing, or where they’ve browsed.”
And, “All parties involved point out that having your data sent to Phorm will be optional,” says The Register, adding:
“Phorm says an opt-out could work by accepting a cookie from its website, but that its trio of ISP partners will be consulting on whether to have an opt-in or an opt-out system.

While I applaud the Opt In setup rather than a default Opt Out setup, I still have concerns about privacy. Stealing cookies has long ago been a stable of spyware. Anytime a site collects data on privacy, be that long term or short term there exists the opportunity to steal data. One need only look at the cracking of some of the encryption schemes where the data is only stored in RAM memory to find out that it can be had by the determined. If you have a sizable database, someone will be looking to obtain that data. That’s not a maybe, that’s a given.
Security has a long ways to go to ensure this sort of thing is held to a minimum. As long as we are operating on a black list and not a default white list, this will always be an area of opportunity for the unscrupulous. If there is a bright side to all this, it is that blacklists are becoming unwieldy and it is now approaching the point that white lists are shorter than black lists in size. At some point this will drive security concerns to a more sure way to provide a better protection. With black lists, anything not on the black list is allowed to connect. White lists are the opposite, anything not on the allowed list is denied.
I have no faith in this sort of setup being secure where some third party gets involved because there is money to be made. What you have instead is opened yet another avenue as a source for getting private information.

Like this is any different to the proposed copyright monitoring system? ISPs are going to record the habits of every single user and give this information to the copyright industries; Can you imagine the potential for abuse in this?
Looks like it’s time to move to sweden; At least some freedoms are still preserved there.

Now that is a great news about privacy concerns. At least the isp’s of UK are doing something about online privacy where today data can be easily stolen from anywhere in the world.

Data Protection Act 1998
Section 11
Right to prevent processing for purposes of direct marketing
(1) An individual is entitled at any time by notice in writing to a data controller to require the data controller at the end of such period as is reasonable in the circumstances to cease, or not to begin, processing for the purposes of direct marketing personal data in respect of which he is the data subject.
(2) If the court is satisfied, on the application of any person who has given a notice under subsection (1), that the data controller has failed to comply with the notice, the court may order him to take such steps for complying with the notice as the court thinks fit.
(3) In this section “direct marketing” means the communication (by whatever means) of any advertising or marketing material which is directed to particular individuals.
In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires—
(a) “obtaining” or “recording”, in relation to personal data, includes obtaining or recording the information to be contained in the data, and
(b) “using” or “disclosing”, in relation to personal data, includes using or disclosing the information contained in the data.
