Teen uses MySpace to trap mugger

p2pnet news | Mobiles:- A Brooklyn teenager used MySpace to track down another teen who’d mugged her and stolen her cell phone.

“He just came up from behind with some other kid and snatched my phone,” Yudelka Polanco, 16, told CBS.

But, “the thief underestimated a tiny piece of modern-day technology found in many cell phones today,” says the story, going on, “the SIM card, which contains data unique to only the individual who owns the phone, including phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc.

“After the robbery, the mugger checked his own email using Polanco’s SIM card. So when Polanco, a junior at Norman Thomas High School, had her old information transferred to her new phone, the mugger’s e-mail address showed up.

“That’s when Polanco decided to do some investigating of her own, and looked up the mugger’s e-mail on MySpace. Sure enough, a profile popped up that showed a picture of the culprit, but she wanted even more evidence.”

But there was a problem, continues CBS. The thief’s page was private, so Polanco asked a girlfriend to start an online friendship with him.

“I told her to request him because his page was private information so I could get a better picture of him,” she says in the story, which adds:

“Turned out the mugger, identified then as 16-year-old Victor Hernandez, thought he was a ladies’ man too and bought into the ploy. Hernandez sent several photos and other identifying information to Polanco’s friend, and the pair finally presented the evidence to police.”

Good job Lady! Another Bully down!

To be a bully criminal you have to be stupid. This is the proof.

Hopefully it will be the turn of these RIAA parasites soon to hit the dust.

  7. MaxEd Says:

I think the point here is that some criminals have always been a bit dumb, but now they’re also children of Internet Age and… So their stupidity can be seen on the Net, and they don’t know how to protect private information.

I dont get how his email would show up on her new phone. If the info he used was saved on a SIM card. That info would be on the SIM card and seeing she got a new phone casue the other one was stolen wouldnt the SIM card also be gone? So I dont see how the email address got to her new phone unless the phone company is saving and logging peoples personal info on their computers.
