US Catholic church sex abuse payouts

p2pnet news | Off Topic:- The Roman Catholic church in the United States paid out more than half-a-billion-dollars in 2007 for child sex abuse cases involving members of the clergy, or 54% more than in 2006, an official report showed Friday, says Agence France-Presse.

Of the $615,000,000 paid out, “526 million dollars went to settling cases - almost double the amount paid out in 2006, the annual report on how well the church is implementing a charter to protect youngsters said,” says the story, going on:

“Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the USCCB, said in a statement Friday that child protection was a priority for the bishops, and praised them for ‘working diligently to implement the Charter’.”

Some $23 million went to therapy for victims or on “support for accused offenders,” and $60 million was paid to lawyers, said the report, commissioned by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Adds AFP:

“The report showed that 689 new allegations of abuse were lodged last year - three percent fewer than in 2006 - but most involved cases dating back decades.

“Most victims were male, and more than half were between the ages of 10 and 14 when the abuse began.”

The number of new allegations fell from 2004 to 2007, but costs related to allegations increased in the same period, the report said.

The story has Terry McKiernan, president of Bishop Accountability, “which documents the abuse crisis in the Roman Catholic church,” saying the report was, “opaque and fudged the number of clergymen who have been accused of sexually abusing children”.

Because it’s only counting, not naming, the priests, “we are not able to determine which of these allegations pertain to priests already accused and which pertain to new priests,” he told AFP, adding:

“This is nowhere near a complete accounting from the bishops conference, but it’s better than nothing.”

“and $60 million was paid to lawyers”

God has met His match, and is loosing. Oh my God!

God has no chance, because lawyers wholy own one third of the government branches, the juducial?

  2. Rekrul Says:

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that one of the core beliefs of the Catholic church is that humans should repress their sexual urges outside of marriage, and yet their own priests can’t control themselves?

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    That’s a shitload of buggery.

“Am I the only one who finds it ironic that one of the core beliefs of the Catholic church is that humans should repress their sexual urges outside of marriage, and yet their own priests can’t control themselves?”

Nope, you hit the nail right on the head. We’re told to believe that the act of masturbation will send us to hell for all eternity, yet the priests don’t think it applies to themselves. What’s even more ironic is that most of the victims are male, despite the fact that Christian extremists are so outspoken against homosexuality.

  4. Eric Says:

This will cause the Vatican to increase their grip on all the US Catholic organizations, which, because of the apparent immorality, are not perceived by them as Catholic… Ultimately a more aggressive approach will be taken which is aimed directly at the “sinful” US society, with an eye towards converting everyone into Catholicism.
