No regrets from ‘Facebook’ student Avenir

p2pnet news | Freedom:- “If all the assignments were worth 10% of his final mark this means that if there were 10 each one was worth 1% of his final mark …. which is next to nothing. When assignments are worth this little collaboration is and should typically be allowed. Avenir still had to write a midterm and final exam which counted towards the bulk of his final mark.

“I read somewhere that he got a B in the class..so he must have done well on the midterm and/or final exams. This means that he knew the course material.”

That’s what a p2pnet reader had to say about the case of Canadian university student Chris Avenir, 18, under threat of expulsion from Ryerson University in Toronto for running a Facebook study group.

But things may be looking up for Avenir.

His story has been picked up around the world and there’s no question Ryerson authorities are feeling the negative effects of all the unwanted publicity.

“Applause and cheers greeted first-year Ryerson student Chris Avenir yesterday as he stepped out of the engineering building,” says the Toronto Star.

“He had just contested an academic misconduct charge and possible expulsion for his participation in a Facebook study group.”

The faculty appeal committee has five business days to decide what the penalty, if any, should be, ” from failing the assignment or the course, to being expelled from the university,” says the story.

“”I feel pretty confident and optimistic about the appeal meeting we just had,” Canwest News Service has Avenir saying of the 90-minute, closed-door hearing.

“I don’t have any regrets about what happened inside.”
