Hackers hacked Beeb’s iPlayer iPhone

p2pnet news | DRM:- The BBC last week released an iPlayer version specifically aimed at the iPhone.

The trouble was, it could be used to download shows without —- Oh! The Horror! —- DRM!

“Hackers had discovered an exploit that allowed them to save the programmes to hard disk and share them with others,” said the BBC.

Shared? Oh! The Horror!

But, “Rights issues mean the BBC is only able to offer streamed programmes for up to seven days after broadcast,” it says, going on >>>

The Digital Rights Management on downloadable programmes from iPlayer was exploited and breached some time ago.

The BBC admitted that it was most likely facing a cat and mouse game with hackers intent on circumventing copy protection.

“It’s an ongoing, constant process and one which we will continue to monitor,” said the corporation in a statement.

The downloads, “were made possible by simple manipulation of user agent strings, which iPlayer developers had used to authenticate that the new H.264 streams were being delivered to an iPhone or iPod Touch,” says The Register.
